Vocal Masterclass Discussion For Season 5 Of The Voice: The Live Shows – Finally

I cannot wrap my head around this show this season. Too! Much! Filler!

Although, that being said, it is a very entertaining ride and, overall, the majority of the singers are excellent.

Which forces the never-ending question: why can’t American Idol tap into this level of talent? They used to – but the last few years have been lacklustre.

And when they do find a truly unique talent, like Season 11’s DeAndre Brackensick, they shove him under a bus. I will never get over that fiasco. He is such a gifted singer – I just bet The Voice would have propelled this singer to the top.

At any rate, we are faced with a Voicerama this week – The Voice will be live on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. On Monday, November 4th, Part One of the Performance Show will air from 8:00 – 10:00, followed by Part Two on Tuesday, November 5th from 9:00 – 11:00 and the Elimination Show on Thursday November 6th from 8:00 – 9:00 PM.

Like I said, way too much filler! And eight singers, presumably two from each team, will be eliminated on Thursday to form a Top 12. Unlike American Idol, it is increasingly difficult to become emotionally invested in these singers because their tenure on The Voice seems so brief. Is it just me? How about you?

About Masterclass Lady

Rosanne (Giallonardo) Simunovic began her musical career in Timmins, Ontario. She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. When Rosanne graduated from O’Gorman High School, she moved on to the University of Toronto where she continued her piano and vocal studies while attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was hired as a piano accompanist for several musical companies, most notably, the National Ballet Of Canada. She presently holds an A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Rosanne has studied choral conducting with numerous well known Canadian Conductors, including Wayne Riddell of Montreal, Quebec and the internationally renowned Dr. Elmer Iseler. She has been a founding member of numerous community-based arts organizations: the Timmins Arts Council, later known as Arts & Culture Timmins, the Timmins Symphony Orchestra, and, the Timmins Youth Singers…as well as the TYS Alumnus choir, the Timmins Concert Singers. In 1987, she was also selected to be the conductor of the Timmins Board Of Education Choir, comprised of talented students from Grades 5 to 8. In 1988, she was elected to the Board Of Directors of the Ontario Choral Federation (now known as Choirs Ontario), where she served as Chair of the Festivals Committee for six consecutive seasons. In 1996, in honour of the Ontario Choral Federation’s 25th Anniversary, Rosanne was selected as one of 25 recipients of the OCF’s Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the choral art. The ceremony was presided by Lieutenant Governor, Hal Jackman. In November 1997, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Rotary Club Of Timmins to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her years of dedication to the artistic development of young musical talent in Timmins. In August of 2002, Rosanne Simunovic was selected by the Board Of Directors of Choirs Ontario to serve as Conductor of both the Provincial Junior and Teen Choir Camps, now renamed in honour of the Camp Benefactors, Don and Lillian Wright. In November 2002, Rosanne was the one of the recipients of the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, honouring her work in the development of the arts in Timmins. Under Rosanne Simunovic’s direction, the Timmins Youth Singers and the Timmins Concert Singers have been featured in numerous choral festivals and performing opportunities outside of Timmins.     I agree with you about the excessive filler and the high level of talent in this years pool but I’m becoming more and more invested in little Jacquie Lee. I was thrilled to see her selected to close the two nights of performances and thought she did a great job with “I Put a Spell on You.” This kid really connects with her song and the audience and doesn’t hold anything back.

    The other contestant that I remain very impressed with is Caroline. What a sweetheart! She is the best of the whispy, quirkie, Indie singers that I have seen compete on one of these shows. She was great in her blind audition but I wondered how long her luck could hold out at finding songs that were sung in her style but she seems to effortlessly bend the music to suite her style.

    There were several good performances both nights. Preston is my favorite “voice” among the male contestants but I didn’t like his song choice this week. It had the rap feature that is currently the rage, but ruins most of the songs it’s used on for me. These guys need to keep in mind that selling cuts at iTunes is the most powerful means of voting.

    I will predict now, without reservation and in spite of Jacquie Lee being my favorite that Caroline will win, hands down, walking away.

    BTW, have you noticed Carly Rose Sonenclar in the commercials for” Law and Order SVU” that ran during “The Voice?” Apparently she is a guest star in this weeks episode.

    I knew Gene would be happy with Jacquie’s performance last night! Holy cow, that girl can sing! Wow, wow, wow!!!

    There are other excellent singers too. I’m a big fan of James Wolpert, and a number of others. I also like Caroline very much. Can’t write more–gotta go to work! Only 7 more weeks and then I’ll be retired! Woohoo!!!

    Hi Louise,
    Work? I thought you were hanging up your spurs.
    I like James as well. I was glad to see him be able to redeem himself after the previous week’s performance.

    The iTunes chart rankings are interesting with James ranking higher than the other contestants. He is currently at #4 and I saw him at #2 earlier today. Caroline follows at #11 and Jacquie at #17. Caroline has four tunes in the top 100 and I didn’t notice anyone else that even had two, so that seems to agree with my assertion that she may win. I based that on what I was hearing from her as well as the individual song ratings that were given her iTunes downloads by those who bought them. Most rated over 400. Very few other contestants’ songs made it above a 200 rating, so she has enthusiastic fans. She also has an album of 5 songs available on iTunes and there are a few decent songs on it, especially the first one.

    Jacquie is an interesting young lady. She has cheerleader good looks, but plays field hockey and goes around to nursing homes singing for the residents. Seems like a good kid. I like the energy and enthusiasm she brings and MCL would be proud of her round mouth position. She knows how to get the crowd fired up as well. You are right, that girl can sing.

    Gene – that round mouth of Jacquie was not lost on me! Thank you for pointing this out. It makes such a difference in the overall quality of the vocal tone.

    Man – she is a spark plug isn’t she? The soulful passion and distinctive artistry is absolutely spectacular and she is only 16. Crazy, crazy!!

    I loved Matthew, Caroline, Preston -and many others. This is a strong pool of talent.

    But Christina guided Jacquie perfectly. Brilliant mentoring.

    Whew, I was afraid I had gotten that wrong about the mouth position! I hope her tone may get a little richer and smoother as she gets a little older but her delivery and enthusiasm is infectious and draws you in. I was thrilled to see how well she was received by the coaches and the judges and the special bond that she and Christina seem to have. “Sparkplug” is the perfect description for Jacquie. I love that! I’ve got to get the name of that charm school and buff camp that Christina apparently went to. I’m starting to like her. I agree with you about her guidance of Jackie and I liked her song choices for all of her team members.

    Both nights were very entertaining although the judges’ comments were pretty much useless on Monday night. None of the singers are bad but a few had a bad night or their coach made a poor song choice for them. The latter may have been by design??? Oh, BTW, I appreciate you posting the special schedule for this week. I may have missed the Thursday show otherwise. 🙂

    Mathew is a powerful and talented singer and his iTunes ratings are pretty high as well. He was fourth among Voice contestants at 21st in the Top 100. So he is a contender. I still haven’t heard him sing anything that I really enjoyed yet, but I’ll keep listening.

    Did you happen to see Cher on Dancing with the Stars Monday night? She was a guest judge and all of the songs danced to and themes were from her catalog. She also sang live twice. I was so glad to see her in a normal, although short, dress and her regular hair do for the first song. It seemed so much more appropriate for her at this stage of her career than the eighties get up she wore when she appeared on Idol to lip sync. She was a lot of fun to watch on the panel, as she has been while working with Blake this season on The Voice. Her candor will keep your attention to see what she will say next.
