I cannot tell a lie. I am going to be missing Amber Holcomb’s radiating presence on Wednesday evening during the Top 3 Performance show.

However, we will still be treated to a wealth of enormous talent when Angie, Candice and Kree take to the stage with their triple performances.

This is the week where we see American Idol’s true colors. None of the songs have been selected by the contestants; rather the judges, producers and Jimmy Iovine have been delegated with this responsibility.

So, song choices for these singers can be either brilliantly assigned or not, depending on who the producers are aiming to see in the Finale next week.

If you want to be spoiled, you can see the song choices here. And, some of them ain’t pretty!

Also, I have a very busy four days ahead of me so I may not be able to furnish you with an in-depth Top 3 Masterclass article. If I do, it will be somewhat abbreviated. I apologize for this!

Enjoy the show everyone and best of luck to the Top 3 singers.

    2. Bye-bye, theme nights
    3. New executive producers?
    4. Scrap the summer tour?
    5. Format tweaks

Yeah to Bye Bye Theme nights. Yeah to a new updated song catalog.
Yeah to a New Executive Produce. Nigel should never have been brought back.
Yeah to new judges. Can them all and start fresh.

Boo do not scrap the summer tour. This helps the contestants earn money so those not signed can put out music. Just lower the prices so families can once again go.
No way do tickets need to be $100+ a piece.

  2. MCL, this maybe just a matter of semantics; but I don’t think Jimmy was “delegated” the task of choosing songs for the contestants. I think he lobbied hard to take the choice from the hands of the contestants. It is in keeping with comments he has made throughout the season. Although he did once concede that Kree was one of the few artist out there who could choose their own songs, mostly he has expressed his displeasure not so much with an individuals choice but rather the concept of letting them choose songs at all.

  3. Jimmy and Nigel would love to have song choice control. Heck they could really manipulate to get whom they want vs. who America wants.

I think Kree has picked several poor song choices, they all have! The judges have said so . A big part of the show is to see what songs the contestants pick for themselves. For me anyway.

  4. I agree that contestants on Idol should choose their own songs and stay or go home by their choices. For the most part the judges comments on song choice are about a particular contestant on a particular night. Not so Jimmy. He has expressed on several occasions during his critiques this season his dissatisfaction with the entire concept of allowing them to make their own song choices. My comment about Kree wasn’t about Kree at all but rather about Jimmys assertion that a majority of artist in general (not just Idol contestants) can’t pick their own songs. In short I am not surprised that the contestants choice is out this years and Jimmy’s is in.

  5. My Grassy Knoll living self thinks Jimmy’s motives are is much more sinister than just
thinking his choice is better. Take away personal choice and you can manipulate and control. IMO Like Angie would have picked her original but now she can’t.

  6. Actually there is some truth in what Jimmy says. He is watching some very talented voices that do not have the knowledge or the ability to pick good songs. Yes that is a talent as well.
Sometimes they are looking at music for what it does for their voices…that is a consideration, but does not necessarily mean that there is an artist within.

When there are three songs to be performed, the contestant should be able to choose at least one. It gives us an idea of the music they like and sometimes the music they will record. Jimmy has his good moments but basically he is a control freak.
One thing that attracted me to American Idol in July, 2002 were Theme Nights. I was so excited to see some wonderful people honored.
I would keep Keith Urban as a judge if he’s willing to stay on the show. Mariah has been better the last 2 weeks. I agree there are changes that are needed. How about changing the voting method? I have heard that Ryan Seacrest is on for one more season. Any truth to this?
