Dancing Masterclass Discussion For Dancing With The Stars Season 16: Week Two

20130319-125403.jpg
I honestly wish I had the time to watch Dancing With The Stars in its entirety but Monday evenings have become a jam-packed night on television.

In addition to Dancing With The Stars, there is also Fox’s The Following starring Kevin Bacon, as well as, beginning this week, Season 4 of NBC’s The Voice.

That’s a lot to take in and my PVR will be working overtime tonight.

However, I cannot tell a lie – I will be glued primarily to The Voice and checking in periodically with Dancing With The Stars.

The Following will be viewed early tomorrow evening because, frankly, it scares me if I watch it too late at night. Ha! It’s quite the thrill ride though!

However, back to DWTS, it will be interesting to see how this season plays out. Many viewers seem to be on Wynonna’s or Kellie’s bandwagon. I think it really helps if these stars already have a strong, loyal following.

As I said last week, it would be fantastic if a knowledgeable expert in dance could provide an in depth analysis of the performances on a weekly basis.

So, if you are so inclined, please contact me via the Contact Page and we can set something up. I am here to serve! Ha!

The show airs Monday night at 8:00 P.M. and Tuesday night at 9:00 P.M. on ABC. I look forward to your feedback. Are you rooting for someone special? Share all your thoughts in the comments section.

  2. I only saw the last three dancers tonight, although I’ve recorded it and will watch it in the morning, but I thought Kelli was spectacular, amazing, and many other such superlatives!!! Loved her dance with Derek.

  3. Louise…it was an outstanding dance, if she ever wants to give up singing I think she could easily have a career in dancing! Derek did an amazing job with that choreography!!

  4. I’m sorry you may not get to watch MCL. It looks like a good season shaping up so far. Kellie was incredible. She dances with the ease of a pro. She’s one of those people who always puts a smile on my face anyway so it’s great to see this new side of her. There are other strong competitors but I think it’s Kellie for the coveted mirror ball trophy.

  5. I think the women are much stronger this season. The only man who has a chance is Jacoby Jones. I thought that jazz dance was outstandin! He’s certainly a crowd pleaser. He also had less rehearsal time, but seems to be a quick study. I think the judges scored him too low because he’s a football player and will have the fan base.

Of the women, I think Kellie, Aly and Zendaya are the standouts. Derek does a great job with the choreography. He has a partner in Kellie who has the athleticism, strength and natural rhythm required to do well in this competition. I thought their jazz routine was quite innovative. Derek was concerned that the judges might not like it, but he need not have worried.

I also think that Mark did a great job with the quickstep. Aly really showed her personality and did a great job with this demanding dance. I think she has a good deal of potential. Zendaya did the jive like you would expect of a sixteen year old with dance experience.

I feel for the older women like Dorothy, who is struggling with an injury and Wynonna. They can’t possibly keep up with the younger women. I still hope that they can at least do their own personal best on the show.

  7. Oh my – I just sauntered over to YouTube and watched Kellie and Derek. Wow! Just wow! Kellie is absolutely incredible. She must have come to this show with some dancing background and, if not, then WOW again. Her dancing is almost flawless and she has the body of a dancer to boot. Good for her!

Poor Wynonna. My concern is that she is going to collapse from exertion. She was clearly trying to get her breathing back on track during the judges’ comments. Very worrisome. I don’t know how she is going to be able to keep up the pace, quite frankly.

Well have to watch some of the others and comment again later.

  8. Does a little pride well up inside you when you see one of our Idol “kids” doing well at something after their season on Idol? It does for me. I’ve always liked Kellie, not so much for her singing but for other things about her. I think many of those qualities come from her grandparents who raised her.

Anyway, I don’t think Kellie has any past dance experience. She was a waitress on roller skates, a cheerleader and participated in beauty pageants. Her pageant talent was singing but I imagine she developed a lot of grace of movement from that experience. I don’t know if the internet video included the pre-performance footage or not, but Derek said that he was going to incorporate some of her cheerleading moves into their routine. She does have a dancer’s body and seems to be a natural at fluid movement. One of the qualities that I mentioned above that is playing into her strong performances is she has a strong work ethic and desire to achieve her goals. She has been most impressive in this competition and a joy to behold.

Zendaya turned the complaints about her age around in what I thought was a pretty funny remark when she said that there was no reason that she couldn’t do as well as “the big kids.” Her “age is just a number comment” apparently irritated the “big kids” though. I would like to know more about her dance background. From what I read in her Wiki, it appears to be more significant than what she and Val said in the pre-dance footage from last week’s show. If she is a professional dancer, she should not be on the show competing with armatures. She is most impressive for a sixteen year old, expressly as long and lanky as she is. Given Val is her partner; I hope she has a full time chaperone! (see last season for full explanation)

As Mindy pointed out, Jacoby Jones has been very impressive and he has a knack for entertaining. The NFL guys have a strong history of being both impressive performers and strong contestants with two wins that come to mind, maybe more, so you can’t count him out.

I had hoped that Aly would be a replay of Shawn Johnson, but she is lagging a little behind the front runners. Maybe she will become more comfortable with dancing and the competitor in her will kick in before long and she will make a run on the leader board. I can’t help but be a little disappointed with Dorthy. Not that she isn’t doing enough to suit me but more that she hasn’t been able to perform at the level that she would like to. All of the “big kids” should watch Kirsti Alley tapes all day long. MCL mentioned Wy’s difficulty breathing but Kirsti looked like she would have a heart attack before our eyes week after week and yet she kept coming back and dancing with a great deal of grace and proved to be a real inspiration. She was another example of one of the reason’s people watch this how.

  9. Gene – yes, I forgot that Kirstie Alley was on DWTS. Still, they do take a risk but I am sure there is medical staff to advise the choreographers about what is appropriate for their age and fitness levels.

  10. Boy I hope so! Some of these contestants could use a full time physician. I think they may have a medic on duty when they are practicing and they have shown past contestants going to the doctor, usually for musculoskeletal issues, for “clearance” to return to dancing. A few have danced with pretty serious medical problems in the finales. Even so, it’s a little scary to see how labored their breathing can get at the end of their routine and after the stair climb. Even the athletes get winded. Jacoby said “there ain’t nothin’ in the NFL that last 90 seconds.” Pretty funny.

  13. Dorothy had survived the elimination and it was down to the last two couples when she came forward to announce that she would not be able to complete the competition due to the issues with her spine. I hated to see it.
