Vocal Masterclass Discussion For American Idol Season 12 Auditions: Baton Rouge

20130116-140645.jpgI thought Wednesday’s show was very good. Many excellent singers were showcased while minimizing the vocally-challenged ones. Thank you producers! You are finally listening to us!

It appears that we are going to be inundated with many excellent female vocalists this season. And they are unique – which is what many of us here in the MCL community are craving like chocolate.

We saw many country singers as well, which is expected given that country artist, Keith Urban, is sitting in one of the judges’s chairs. And, I must say, most of them are very good and offer something a little different to this extremely popular genre of music.

The Baton Rouge show also airs on Thursday on Fox from at 8:00 – 9:00 P.M. Eastern.

I will provide live updates once again, which you will find at the end of this article.

And thank you all for your excellent feedback re the live updates. They help me keep the singers’ faces and names in my head as we move toward the Hollywood rounds in a couple of weeks or so.

Do you have any favourites yet or is it too early in the game for you? Nice to see Season 11 contestant, Candace Glover, back in the race. She left a very strong impression with this year’s judges.

Also, if you haven’t done so, please join my Facebook Page for the latest updates.

Live Update:

  • 8:01 P.M. We are in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
  • 8:02P.M. Megan Miller comes in on crutches due to an accident. She is scheduled for surgery after the audition. She sings Something’s Got A Hold On Me and really drives this song in the right direction. I love her rich, free-styled manner of singing. She is a true natural. Off to Hollywood she goes.
  • 8:14 P.M. 17-year-old Charley Askew from Little Rock, Arkansas sings a Queen number than lapses into Nature Boy. He has an impressive voice. He is as cute as a button and has a rich, crisp tone. Gorgeous. He gets his Golden Ticket and deservedly so. This kid is going to go far.
  • 8:19 P.M. 17-year-old Maddie Assel was nominated by her grandmother to be on American Idol. Randy Jackson pays her a surprise visit and invites her to appear on American Idol. Oh boy, is she ever good. Her phrasing, her focus and musicality are absolutely stellar. Oh, she likes former American Idol finalist, Haley Reinhart.. And she does have Haley’s jazzy quality in her voice and performance style. She is off to Hollywood for what I am sure will be a long run on Season 12.
  • 8:24 P.M. Quick montage of the vocally challenged
  • 8:26 P.M. 22-year-old Paul Jolly just lost his grandfather who was an enormous influence on his life. He sings Rascal Flatt’s I Won’t Let Go and does so beautifully. Love his vocal skills and he has a beautiful clarity to his rich voice. He has a star quality happening as well. He easily earns his Golden Ticket.
  • 8:33 P.M. Christopher Barthal is a hyper kind of guy and he decides to sing Adam Lambert’s If I Had You and Keith Urban says he likes the keys that song was in!! Hahaha. That’s a great line. Have to remember that one. Needless to say, he goes no further than Baton Rouge.
  • 8:37 P.M. We are introduced to a Doctor by the name of Dr. Calvin Peters. Now, there’s a first. I don’t think there has ever been a doctor on the show before because, you know, they usually have a life. But this guy is very good. A light, heady voice and genuine performing style. He gets through to Hollywood, so those patients will have to wait I guess.
  • 8:40 P.M. Michelle, Someone Else and then Brandy are quickly showcased and all are great and earn their Golden Ticket.
  • 8:45 P.M. Firefighter Dustin Watts strolls in and sings Garth Brooks’ She’s Every Woman and does very well. Gold Ticket!! But, I am already getting mighty tired of all the country singers.
  • 8:53 P.M. 19-year-old Burnell Taylor was inspired by his grandfather who was extremely musical. His family lost everything due to Hurricane Katrina. Awful. But what was not awful was his absolutely stellar singing voice. He gets a standing ovation from the judges and he deserved it. His phrasing, musicality, tone – everything – was truly special. Going to enjoy watching his progress on this show.
  • 8:57 P.M. 34 singers move forward to Hollywood.
  • 8:58 P.M. Next week, the auditions are in San Antonio, Texas and Long Beach, California. . Stay tuned….

    1. Nice read Roseanne, watch for my sister tonight, she made it in front of the judges but was cut. Could be on tonight, she looks like me. LOL

    2. Shari – really??? What’s her name? Too bad she was cut though. Happy for all your success. So well-deserved. :)

    3. BrotherKarl – you said what I felt. I think Nikki is totally disrespectful of Mariah and the other judges as well. She is going to get herself into mucho hot water as this show moves along – just like you said. That mouth never stops and will eventually get her into a heap of trouble.

      Brotherkarl,

Yeah! I saw what you saw last night with Nikki…but I seen the same at times from Mariah. I think it is safe to say that these two really don’t like each other, don’t respect each other, and it is not just a ploy for ratings..this season could be interesting.

Hopefully though they have gotten a handle on it and have had a chance to get to know one another better, because they have not been in the news lately.

    6. Two words for me: Burnell Taylor. Loved it when Keith said he could “turn a atheist”. I believe he could.

    7. Vonnie, I think Nicki respects Mariah’s accomplishments – who wouldn’t. They are grown up ladies and should act civil to each other for the sake of the show. Then again, they may be following producer’s directions. I so dislike phony baloney! I want Idol judges to be honest!

    8. LOL, Kariann…I was commenting on something that brotherkarl had said in another thread, he pointed out some things about the judges table that I hadn’t paid alot of attention to, I like Nikki, I’m not real crazy about Mariah. But agree, would rather the judges be judges without the drama. I really like Keith…

On another note, didn’t you like Colton Dixon last year? I hear his song on the radio all the time, “You Are” it is a really god song and he sounds really good.

    9. Hey Everybody

Truth to the matter …the last show Nikki kind of held back a whole lot of that which she had been going forth with on the last shows. I was shocked from the first audition of the last show that she did’t speak out as soon as the contestant came out because literally almost 90/95% of the time at every audition she literally was always the first to open her mouth. It rarely happened on the last show though. Its something about her to me thats just very “street” that in my opinion just doesn’t belong in that forum

As far as Mariah …I’m not a huge Mariah fan either. She has amazing voice though to me and her personality to me seems to be “classically Hollywood”. Sometimes it seems like she has the ….” don’t you know I’m the stuff ” syndrome. I will say this though, since those first shows Mariah has changed the way she interacts with with Nikki now. She makes sure she doesn’t say anything to her (notice they never talk directly to each other anymore) and if she says something that she thinks can be misconstrued by Nikki, she will retract what she said because almost everything she says to her, Nikki has had a comeback to her. So you can tell its like she’s walking on egg shells and is being careful not to fan the flames. Its got to be uncomfortable and when you’re under pressure like that at some point the crap is going to hit the fan. People can’t hold back from who they are forever. Its gonna come out. From what I understand, the episode that there was so much talk about was not the episode that aired a couple weeks ago when Nikki walked out. My understanding is there was one much more heated than that.

As far as good talent. There have been some good talent there but still I haven;t seen that unique talent there that makes me go ” now we’re cooking”.

      “I’m a holdin on though” :-)

    10. Chiming in for the first time this season … I don’t know how long I can deal with Nikki Minaj. I don’t want to see real conflict on the judges panel. Occasional witty banter is ok, but …

    11. I’m with you Jessica.

I don’t mind a little “witty banter” . Its makes it interesting. This is something a little more then that though. It takes away from what this show is to be all about …. the contestants. I’ve seen an episode of those “Mob Wive’s shows. Thats not just cattiness going on. Thats some “Jerry Springer” crap. If thats where “Idol” is going now…. I’m definitely done. It just not my type of thing.

    12. I agree brother karl…there is alot of tip toeing going on, and I think on the guys part as well, I think they hold their breath when one of the girls says something that can be turned into a cat fight…Loved the Jerry Springer comment!!!! That was funny! Also, what’s with these girls hair? They act like they don’t want it to move???

Yeah! I haven’t heard that one yet that has perked my ears!

    13. The hair ! OMG !! LOL !! I thought it was just me. You know how these hair sprays are now … Its clear cement !! And if 1 or 2 strands of hair gets pushed out the wrong way while its still wet, instead of hanging down them babies are going to be sticking straight out through out the whole night and they won’t know it. !! LOL . So maybe its best that they don’t touch it.

    14. LOL…I’m glad someone else has noticed the HAIR too…I’m watching, saying flip the stuff behind your shoulders and leave it alone already!!! They pet it like they have on a new mink fur or a cat around their neck, GAH!!!

    15. Vonnie and BrotherKarl. Your hair comments are hilarious. I didn’t even notice but then again I’m a woman so I guess I can empathize with the need for really good hairspray. Laughing out loud at your comments BrotherKarl regarding the Jerry Springer theme at the judges’ table. Hilarious but sadly true.
