Vocal Masterclass Discussion For Season 2 Of The X Factor: The Live Shows Begin

20121002-204334.jpg
Finally! The live shows begin!

The Top 16 are scheduled to perform on The X Factor Wednesday on Fox from 8:00 – 10:00 P.M. with the results to be revealed on Thursday at 8:00 P.M.

I am totally lost with this show – last week’s cancellation threw me off and, I suspect, many of you as well.

Hopefully, all of this scheduling and rescheduling nonsense is behind us and we can move on to what I feel is most important part of the competitive process- hearing these singers perform live and unedited (well, hopefully).

We have to remember that there was some crazy lip syncing last season, if you can call it that. Some of the singers weren’t, well, in sync and the truth came out.

As I write this article, I am waiting for the first sign of trick or treaters to invade my doorstep. Where are those munchkins? Better hurry. I close down this Halloween party at 8:00 P.M. and start my own – The X Factor party!

Here’s a thought – the singers should dress in costume and sing songs from Phantom Of The Opera. Ha! One never knows, but I highly doubt this will happen. Darn.

Enjoy the show and add your comments when you can.

  1. I felt that Brit and Demi’s artists were the most prepared and exceptional. LA’s acts except for Tate Stevens were BAD! I hope 2 go from LA’s group Jason Brock and Vino Allen. Simon also did not prepare his groups well and I hope 2 groups go Sister C and Lyric 145 or LYLAS. I fully expect Emblem3 to win this or be in finals and be the next huge million selling group. I knew One Direction would be huge (not my thing but I knew the tweens and teens would love them) I think Emblem3 will also take off with this demographic.

The most talent is in Brits group IMO. If one from each judge needs to go this will be tough. I love love love Beatrice & Carly Rose. They have such powerful unique voices. Diamond is like a young Whitney. Arin would be the one to go and I would find that a shame. He is good but his nerves got the best of him last night.

If one of Demi’s acts needs to go it has to be CeCe. Her vocals were terrible and a hair color change isn’t going to make her likeable. It may be Willie but I would keep him as he does have a unique thing going on.

    In recap:

    My 4 cuts would be

Jason Brock, Vino Allen, Sister C and Lyric 145

If it is 1 per judge

Jason Brock, Lyric 145, Arin, CeCe

  3. I know Aubry. I am barely watching here. Some really bad decisions tonight about who stays and who goes. And the singing is beyond horrible. Just awful.

  4. I so agree!! The adults are not good IMO and only Emblem3 of the groups.
It is a shame that one of these teens have to go. I just throught Arin sang beautifully and I know Diamond has a great voice. Shame.

  5. Just my opinion:

Khloe needs to be the one sent home…Mario can stay, he’s a natural at hosting!
    Demi…has short term memory loss!
Brittany…has really surpriised me, for the good!
LA…he too suffers from memory loss; people’s names, especially those on his team!
    Simon…you did good!

Tate out of this whole shabang should be the last contestant standing, cash cow, money maker should be flashing in Simon’s eyes about now!!! He’s so ready, he should be sitting in a recording studio pumping out records right now!!!

  6. Khole is dreadful on that we agree. I think $$$ are flashing in Simon’s eyes but not for Tate. Yep he is good and the country market will love him but the tween, teens and 20’s love Emblem3. Twitter exploded for them. Mark my words these boys are gonna be huge like One Direction. Not my personal preference mind you as I believe Beatrice and Carly Rose are the most gifted vocally but a gal cannot beat Emblem3 IMO.

  7. Vonnie,
I have to agree, Tate was the only “ready for prime time” performer on the first live show. His biggest challenge will be surviving LA’s mentoring. The poor performances were the fault of their mentors more than the performers themselves. Many contestants had very poor song choices. The skanky dance routines, light shows (just because we can), and thin lifeless music tracks, distracted the performers as well as the audience. Those who performed the second night, in the more down to earth and heartfelt “sing for your life” round, gave far more compelling performances. The simple musical accompaniment on piano was preferable to the canned music they have on performance nights. Very few of the performers were better in their first live performance than they were at their first audition.

The groups don’t interest me much. I like the short girl in the girl group though. I would make her the lead singer with one other featured singer, (that would somehow be the tall girl from Sister C) get rid of a few group members, and make the rest of them backup singers. Then I would tell them to do anything they want to on stage except stand in a straight line or grab any of their personal parts, as everyone is want to do these days.

While I haven’t agreed with all of her choices, I have been impressed with Demi’s overall performance and behavior on the show this season. She has remarkable maturity for a twenty year old and a pretty fair knowledge of her craft which she has no trouble articulating. She holds her own with Simon and she and Britney maintain a civil relationship. She looked like Demi Moore last night. I miss Britney’s odd faces though. Why would anyone hire a Kardashian?

  8. Gene and Aubry,

Glad you both agree about Khloe…and Gene that you agree about Tate, even his name sounds like a country star!!!

I like Demi, but was just a little confused about her comments about the one group…the three girls…and then turning around and praising them, ah! Well, it is what it is!!!

Aubry, I can’t seem to get to excited about the boy band…but who’s to say as the competition goes on!

I Love Beatrice, she is a very talented young lady! I don’t know how well Tate will do, because like Gene said, it depends on their judge/mentor and LA has checked out with this group, which is a real shame! Tate could truly skip all of this nonsense and make records!

  9. Hi Vonnie and Gene,

I do not prefer Emblem3 personally. I am just stating what I am seeing from important demographics. One Direction did not win Xfactor UK but have gone on to be one of the most famous acts to be found on a reality show. They have sold like 7 million records world wide. The same demographic that embraced One Direction is embracing Emblem3.

Tate has a great voice even one who doesnt enjoy country singing hears that his tone is wonderful.

  10. i have been a ‘vino all the way’ fan from the very minute he graced the audition stage singing Trouble which i mentioned here a long time ago. his Sober was mind blowing to me. i have played and played and played these videos over and over. i haven’t been a fan like this for a long long time, his voice is something that just penetrates deeply inside of me. his first live performance, song chosen by L.A. was horrible and depressing, he isn’t a pop kind of guy, what was L.A. thinking, that whole thing wasn’t vino; i didn’t hear that voice that moves me. yes, probably emblem 3 could win because of the little girls voting like crazy, but i do believe that vino will be way up there if he is allowed to be who he is. vino, a piano or guitar, and quiet. no flouncing around dancing girls, no flashing and crashing light show, no exploding fireworks, just vino’s voice.

  11. Carly Rose is still my favorite. She is really, really talented. There are some wonderful singers on the show but some were suffering incredible pitch issues. It was excruciating to hear.

  12. Aubry,

I totally get what you are saying, and do believe that you may be right, as hunter said, the teenie boppers will invest in voting for these “cuties”, for this reason their should be a cap on the voting.

    Hunter,

I too like Vino, and am not sure why LA would not want to show his team in their best light…he did the same thing with the rest of his contestants, especially Jason Brock…do I think Jason will go deep in this competition? Probably not, but, he does have a good voice and his strengths should be showcased. I do think LA cut the right person from his team…that said, he now needs to show up and put some effort into this group, cause he has a couple that could go very deep in this competition if not all the way!

I think maybe Brittany may have the best handle on her group as far as their performances…I think she is going to invest herself in these kids…she had the toughest group, I think to make cuts from!!! But I think she too made the right choice!

  13. Vino is awesome however he was off pitch badly and that was a terrible song choice. Still there is no place in the music industry for Vino. If he wins he would not sell and would not get radio play. Sad yes but true none the less.

  14. gene, you said: “Very few of the performers were better in their first live performance than they were at their first audition.” and i so totally agree. i think part of it has to do with that over hyped awful production and the horrible screaming of the audience. i believe the show must be targeted to kids: do kids love the noise of the screaming audience?

i remember last year being totally upset how they ‘dressed everyone up’. i’m thinking of rachael here especially. cute young 13 y.o. rachael caked with eye make up, and done up hair instead of allowing her to be who she was.

in this first show i didn’t rebel with the make up but the clothes were pretty bad on most of them. they were so ‘heavy’…so, much, overdone, for their bodies. i’m thinking of the rappers, two boys and one girl (i think they’re a really cute group but didn’t like at all what they did this time). cute little diamond is just so cute and joyful and they put that ugly baseball cap on her covering her face.

i think brittany should allow carly to be carly. she IS mature, don’t try to make her act younger by putting her in your school girl clothes.

  15. aubry, as i mentioned, vino has ‘captured me’. based on his original four songs, i would run out and buy his album. i normally don’t run out and do that. i can’t be the only one. so there IS a market for him. based on the live performance, i wouldn’t. again, i fault L.A. for that (as did simon). i had so looked forward to vino singing, i couldn’t wait, and watching him was depressing and rather creeped me out. i want the vino back i saw in all the auditions.

  17. vonnie, regarding the ‘overs’, i really didn’t want any of them to go (i am glad that horrible tara simon wasn’t picked). i really loved david and was very unhappy that he was picked to leave. but i like jason too. i’ve really loved the overs as personalities (i want to call them the ‘olders’) . i’ve loved that the country guy roomed with the gay guy, and that in pictures the gay guy has his arm around the country guy and the country guy is perfectly comfortable with that. 🙂 also, did you know that they found david’s birth mother. apparently she had him around age 12. she’s very poor, doesn’t read or write, and doesn’t have any electronic equipment like computers or tv. can you imagine what david would have been like had he not been adopted. it is nice seeing these very ‘conservative, normal looking’ parents, with this tattooed, pierced son, showing the real love and support of each other.

i love all these juxtapositions of ‘appearances’ and relationships i’ve seen with these ‘olders’.

  18. p.s., regarding tara simon (the former female in the ‘olders’): she complained about ‘being edited’, and that we didn’t see the ‘real her’ and yet, she SAID and DID all the things we saw.

  19. Hunter.I agree with you, I really like the “older” group, they all are talented and great personalities! I liked David too, but, between his voice and Jason’s, I like Jason’s better…I don’t like the image that LA is trying to bestow on Jason! Let the man sing ballads or what ever to showcase his range!!!

As far a Vino not having a place in the music industry…people thought that about Susan Boyle too!!!

    Like

  20. vonnie, you’re exactly right, susan boyle is a great example. and an interesting point..she didn’t win, she was second. i remember she was beaten by a group…oh, i just looked it up, i realize now that was ‘britain’s got talent’ rather than britain’s xfactor, and the group that beat her was a dance group named Diversity. i saw a little clip and they are great. but i’ve ‘never heard of them’.

if i remember correctly, you didn’t watch the first show of xfactor? jason had talked about his vision of seeing ‘a glitter explosion’ as he performed so i think this performance was giving that to him. the choreography is being done by (i forgot his name) but i saw in an article how demi was really really upset with the choreographer when he changed up what she wanted and in the end she won that debate.

i think it was gene, here, who said jason fits vegas, and that is a great point. from
this exposure, i can see him doing great in vegas, and he’d get more of his glitter.

i liked david better. 🙂 but like i said, i wish both could have stayed.

  21. I liked David better as well. The “judges” slammed David as being to theatrical but did not do the same to Jason who IMO was way way more theatrical. My daughter and I loved Davids tone and Jasons is like calk on the blackboard going the wrong way. As for Vino, where is David Cook? The guy who won Americas got Talent and the guy who came in 2nd on Xfactor USA last year? He is similar IMO. I would love to be wrong on this as I do like Vino quite a lot. He has that Scott Strap sound which I love. Let him sing Creed, Pearl Jam, Credence Clearwater etc. He is not Pop Rock lite. If they must have him perform Pop Rock let him sing some Daughtry songs. These are better suited to his lower register, grit and growl.

Susan Boyle wasa novilty act. People embraced that she was a disabled women who could sing and championed her.

The same occured with Paul Potts who was on XFactor uk and was an incredible Opera singer IMO. He blew me away. Part of Paul’s appeal was his back story and personality and Opera rarely does well in there shows. Yet once Paul stepped on stage that all changed.

  22. Hunter,

Lol, actually I could see Jason on a sitcom or on Glee, he is funny with ALOT of personality, I think he is great!!! I didn’t know that about Jason, well, then he got his glitter bath didn’t he, lol…You are right I came to the table late, I missed so much background on each of these guys, and am now only picking up bits and pieces about David…

  25. vonnie, since you didn’t see some of the earlier shows, i wanted to give you the vino video links, there are four.

the first song is what got me hook, line, and sinker. the last song is just stunning and mind blowing to me. the third song, where they sing together, the judges do that just to test them. they are not supposed to duet, they’re just being compared.

as i said, the live show performance was just so bad (as i think they were for most of the performers) and rather creeped me out. he’s just not a pop kind of guy. i hope they allow the vino that is in these videos to sing this week.
