Vocal Masterclass Discussion For Season 2 Of The X Factor: Who Makea The Cut?

This week”s offering of back-to-back shows, airing Wednesday and Thursday, will determine which singers make the cut for the live shows.

Only four singers will be chosen for each of the four groups, so some mighty fine singers will be sent a-packing.

I honestly am not a fan of this portion of The X Factor. It is drawn out and tedious and full of drama that I, for the life of me, don’t fully appreciate. Where is the appeal? The ratings are still not impressive so, perhaps, they need to rethink this segment of the show.

However, next week we are thankfully immersed in the live shows. Let’s just hope that the production isn’t overblown for the performers’ numbers – as it clearly was last season.

Comments anyone? Catch you later.

She studied piano with Anne Pizzale and later, at an advanced level, with Soeur Anita Vaugeois (Sister Cecile of Les Soeurs De L’Assomption in Timmins). Her vocal and accompaniment skills were nurtured by her aunt, the late Dorothea Mascioli. 1. Hey Rosanne

Last night the weirdest thing happened here. The game was to replace X-factor at 8:00. It came on but it was raining so the host’s talked hoping it would soon stop. 40 minutes later it hadn’t so they brought X factor on instead. 20 minutes into X-factor the rain stopped and the game came back on here. So last night here in Michigan our network only aired 20 minutes of X-Factor which was still interrupted by the game. I have never seen any thing like that in my life. (And there is another game scheduled for tonight)

At any rate I did see 20 minutes of the show of the selected talents between 13-17, and I’ll just say it like this … I’m happy with all their choices and of course Carly is my top choice of all the 4 kids that are left. I have never seen a child sing with that much emotion. Incredible talent. There are some other talents in the other category’s that I like better who I think could win this but because on this end we haven’t seen who was picked for the other category’s I don;t know who’s in and who’s out. I will say this though …. Carly will definitely be the top runner in the 13-17 category. I can’t imagine anyone else in that spot

Hopefully I can find a full recorded episode from last night online

  2. Karl,
I saw the same broadcast as you. I have read that Canada saw most of the show and that it will be re-broadcast tonight in it’s integrity. Some other show besides the game was on when X was supposed to come on, then the rain delay recap, then 2 and a half houses on the X and back to the game. Fortunately I buzzed through all of that in FFF on the DVR.
Britney’s choices were better than I expected. Yeah, Carly will likely be in the top two. Vino may be there as well. They have almost completed the transformation of Vino from scary man into gentle as a lamb momma’s boy. They missed out on the drama of having him at Britney’s house though. I was sorry to see Daryl go home. He was one of my favorite singers from this season, probably because he isn’t hip enough to be chosen for the live shows. I prefer him to Jason and thought he might make the top five or six. Maybe LA will go to his house and beg him to forgive his error!

You said “2 and a half HOUSES on the X”. Do you mean you guys saw 2 and a half fours of X-Factor? 🙂 That didn’t happen here. We got only 20 minutes of X-Factor, then the game came back on. X-Factor never came back so I don’t know anything about the other category’s other then what you told me. And according to scheduling here there is no repeat coming on today. Maybe I can find it on “On Demand” or something.

I hope you are not referring to Daryl Black . No 😦 Are you saying they sent him home? I hope not. He is one of the best that I thought they had left. I actually liked Jason better, but if they picked him it had to be based on his earlier performances because his performance at LA’s house was not that good in my opinion.

Tate is also good. Oh my … I got a bad feeling about this. I wish I saw it. I’m going to see if I can find it

  5. Hi guys…I got to see all but Demi’s last two picks and Simon’s picks!!!

I agreed with all of Brittay’choices…she has a strong team!!! I didn’t agree with all of LA’s choices…the first guy that was sent home should have stayed and the first guy picked to stay should have went home, I liked the rest of his choices!!!

Demi’s first two picks I liked!!!

Sorry! I don’t know there names yet!!!

  6. Hi Karl,

I guess my version was more like Vonnies’ than yours. I saw Britney, LA and the first two of Demi’s choices. Didn’t mean to be a spoiler, but I thought we had all seen the same thing.

Yeah, Daryl Black bit the dust. It’s a shame; even though he isn’t flashy he’s a good solid performer with a nice voice. If I could spend a couple of hours listening to any of these contestants, he would probably top the list. A lot of people are good for a song or two and then you need to listen to something else, but Daryl has listen-ability. I really expected to see him around longer. The cowboy is solid as well and has a lot of crowd appeal; very likeable. He has a really nice tone to his voice and is the best traditional country voice I’ve heard on one of these shows.

I hope you get to see it tonight. The piece I read said it would be aired in it’s entirity.

  9. Hey Gene

Yeah … according to scheduling the playoffs will be on tonight. I did read some of the stuff that Hunter read saying that X-Factor would air in its entirety next Tuesday and that Simon was kind of upset about it. The thing is ….. if I remember correctly , next Tuesday is the last of the Presidential Debates here …which is going to be on all of the major networks, so I don;t know how they are going to air yesterday and todays show next Tuesday in their entirety. The debates have come on every Tuesday at 9:00 for the last 3 weeks. It’d be interesting if next week they didn’t come on.

Oh well …. I guess I’ll have to hear what everybody says about it before I actually see it, or figure out.

At rate … I’m glad to hear that Tate made it through. To me Tate is ready for the big time. His younger competitor Willie is interesting too, if he can just decide if hes country or R&B. A young black country artist would be a rarity and it really set him a part from everybody. I heard that David made it through too. Hes good to me, but not great. And Tara, to me its just seemed like a mater of time. Her over confidence is what I think did it for her. Not sure what you guys are saying about Vino. Something about some drama at Brittni’s house? Thing about Vino is …for me ..his voice is incredible. He just doesn’t seem like he can take the pressure the public will put on him. He’s one of the best voices there. I guess I just don’t see him becoming a star.

  11. Do you guys want to wait for the show to air or do you want the list of the top 16? It’s up to you. If you want the list you can go to xfactornetwork.com and there they have the entire list. This is an actual accurate list and they are also hinting that a 17th person may be brought back as a wild card. We will have to wait and see if that is the case though.

I am super angry with Fox for putting on that game instead of The X Factor. I think all sports should be on premium channels so those who choose to watch can and the rest of us can enjoy what we want as well. I wonder how much money that cost Simon Cowell in ad dollars? Ridiculous!!!!

  14. Karl,
The last debate is on Monday night next week, so the Voice and DWTS will be shortened I guess.

The Vino drama is just something that I made up earlier in the season. The way they played him against Britney at his original audition like he was scaring her; I thought it would be a continuing drama and that he would end up on her team and prove to be a teddy bear. Didn’t happen but they have softened his image a lot. You will see what I mean when you see the episode. I liked Vino’s original audition a lot, but like many of the other singers, I think he dropped the ball a little bit at LA’s house. I also believe he has hurt his commercial potential with the jail house tats on his face. The work on his head is better but it can’t be helping him either. Like I said before, he has bad judgment written all over his face.

I agree that Willie has a lot of potential and marketability. Black Country artist are rare but they have been well received and successful. Charlie Pride and now Darius Rucker is doing quite well since crossing over to country. That’s a pretty small group but I don’t see anything in Willies way. I liked his R&B influence, but there were spots where he sort of switched over to R&B for a moment. The two genres have a lot of common ground so I think he could be a hit.

Yeah, Tara was cast as the obnoxious one and Cheetah gir, as Vonnie said,l is her younger sister. She won’t make it either. Both of them demonstrate that there is no mentoring on this show because they both have talent and looks but both need a huge amount of direction and a personality makeover.

    Hunter,
Thanks for the scheduling update / correction.

    Taymaro,
Let me guess who is coming back as the 17th contestant.

  16. Holy! Lots of action here today and night. Thanks everyone for your comments. Most appreciated as always.

Honestly, I could care less about last night’s episode. I just want the live shows to begin.

However, Simon has every right to be furious. It’s insulting and costly. I am sick to death of sports invading every channel on television.

But then, maybe the ratings are better for the sports events. Who knows? The fact of the matter is that not everyone is a sports fan and regularly scheduled shows should not be pre-empted because of rain at a sporting event. It’s their problem not ours.

  17. Vonnie,
I don’t know if she did, but I think she will and Paige (sp) will stay. I meant sister in spirit, but you are correct about which one. They are both playing the part of someone that is full of theirself. It’s hard to put much stock in it.

  18. MCL,
In the 5/8s of the show that was aired here there was only one semi surprise elimination. He was more of a disappointment than a surprise. You could tell from last week’s show who would stay and who would go. You didn’t miss much.

  19. Simon should be upset, he has to pay for that airtime…there are a cazillion channels that carry sports, why can’t these games be on there…they wouldn’t like it so much if X-Factor cut in on their channel on the last game of the world series and the games were tied…just sayin’!!!

  21. Hey All:

Cheetah girl as Vonnie has named her 🙂 is CeCe Frey and according to the spoliers list she did make it through as well as her competitor Paige Thomas, Jennel Garcia and young R&B country singer Willie Jones

Gene I like Willies R&B influence in there too but for me his R&B side is not as polished as his country side and I think when you;ve got something good like that going you should stick with it. When he first sang and hit those base notes the girls really started screaming. He hasn’t hit any notes like that since and I think thats where he needs to go if he’s going to go further. None of the guys in the competition have sung in those lower registers and that and those other couple of things he’s got going will set him apart . I don;t think he knows thats his magic though. And as far as being a hit, I’m not a fan at all of country BUT if he stays country I’m confident he’ll be a star but I’m not sure that he will stay the country route through out the competition. I don’t think that talent will go anywhere in the R&B arena .

  23. Yeah .. Her first performance was really moving to me. But I think there was really a lot going on their emotional that day and it came out in the song. I think she’d tried to duplicate that emotion it in her following performances but she couldn’t pull it off.

  24. Maybe she will be one of the wildcard picks…who knows this is reality tv…! I’m actually looking forward now to see how Brittany’s team does, she has a really strong team!

I like Tate and too wish Willie would stay country. Tate is ready for a record deal now, Willie may take a little or alot longer but I think he could do really well in the country genre…I grew up singing along to Charlie Pride, one thing about my momma, she couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket, but she loved and still loves music, so growing up in her house we got introduced to alot of different singers!!! And Willie reminds me alot of him, that same beautiful smile and that easy, kind way about him!!! I think Tate has those qualities too, but Willie just seems to ooze personality!

  25. Jillian is the girl who was buuied and bonded with Demi at the audition, right? I thought she was as good at Demi’s house but demi said something about her stage manerisms being over done. Her performance style seemed ok to me but I think they were looking for a reason to let her go. She was my favorite performer at Demi’s house.

  26. Yep. Thats her. She was good but I think Demi wanted to see if there was something more to her other then than fact that was bullied that could be brought to the table and it didn’t happen. I don’t know who’s coming back as #17 ….but I would like to see Daryl. There is one contestant however that we’ve only seen perform once that never came back as right after her performance they rushed her off to the hospitol. She did make it though and she was really good. I have her name written down someplace. If I find it I’ll let you guys know who she is.

Both of these young women, Britney and Demi, and Christina Aguilera as well, come for the Mouse machine; they were all Mouseketeers and that seems to be an excellent training ground. You will recall what little dynamos all the mouse kids have been on DWTS over the years. I was actually more impressed with the things Demi was saying to her team members than any of the other coaches. Surprisingly, she handled herself and her mentoring very well, despite her youth. I would have encouraged the bullied girl to try and leave it behind her and would have chosen her over cheetah girl. I liked her singing style and song choices better.

  31. Panda !! Yes thats who I’m talking about. I remember Simon asking her was it her real name. She was awesome and the crowd was screaming for her and right after they rushed her off to hospital and she kept saying “Don’t tell Simon. He’ll think I can’t do it”.

I’m like you Gene, she really good. I’d like to see her come back. They DID pick her.but she never came back. I won’t say she was my favorite but she most definitely. in my opinion was one of the best they had this year. Didn’t have the look , but definitely had the voice and I can see her touring like that as well. But records …. is there still a market big enough in the recording industry for the blues? I know they can do concerts but can they still sell records?

  32. Yeah! No! I didn’t get to see her audition. I wonder if there’s any youtubes of her!!

With missing the back stories I didn’t know that Jillian had had any issues…that’s too bad, do you think that may be why Demi didn’t choose her, maybe thinking she wouldn’t be able to handle the emotional part of the show?

I tape the show and clip on through the judges comments usually, I only watched them during the house rounds because they have more time and can be a great help or not!!! Can’t remember any of Demi’s comments though! I will say Simon seems less stressed this year with Paula not sitting next to him, yea, no???

Thanks for digging up the link for Panda “Rose.” I really enjoyed seeing her again. I love her too, MCL. I wonder what happened to her and if she’s ok. She had a lot of fun with Simon calling him her “baby daddy.” Maybe she’s #17?

The Blues are alive and well. There is resurgence in popularity of the great classic artist both alive and dead and many of the older British rockers who were actually doing covers of American Blues artist when they invaded in the sixties are coming home to the Bues today. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Joe Cocker and younger “older” artist like Cyndi Lauper, Dr John and Bonnie Raitt to name a few are very much into the Blues. Even Melinda Doolittle had two Robert Johnson songs on her debut album. There are blues influences in most of the other genres of music as well. For the artist, it’s not like being the latest and greatest pop star so I can’t see someone like Simon ever promoting a Blues artist but if you love your fans and like to play a different city every night and cut 10 albums to sell a million copies, you can make a living.

  41. Hey All.

Listen …not trying to turn this into A Panda Ross page but I read some things that are really interesting about her. For starters, as you know that first audition were taped months ago and some weeks after Panda was taken away that day in the ambulance,
she had the had a gastric bypass surgery and is now 60 pounds lighter.

Heres the part that I found interesting … As was aired, we know Panda was picked for boot-camp. What we didn’t hear AND what hey didn’t show was that she was AT boot-camp and got through BUT was cast not as a soloist but into a group and their group sang the Beetles song “Little Help From My Friends” (can you imagine Panda singing in a group …I don’t think so. Her personality is to big and it would look too awkward) . At any rate the group didn’t make it. All of this was edited out according to an interview she did. From what I understand though in boot-camp she rocked it and while their group didn’t make it when they sang at Simon’s House SHE stood out, in the group .( I suumed this up only from reading a number articles and some face book stuff so you know how that is)

I shared it because…I’m just a thinking ……maybe she’ll be the surprise # 17. I can;t see Panda winning but I sure would like to see her again in the show. LOVE HER !!!

In the meantime, while we’re waiting to see … I found this wild You Tube clip of her singing and I thought it was SO cool …I had to show it. Tell me what you think

Rosanne, I hope you don’t mind. (If its just too much Panda, take it of I wouldn’t be offended. I’d be good and remain a loyal fan of this site)

  43. Kariann and Vonnie,
You make a good point about Tate’s age and that it isn’t a problem in country music. I agree with Vonnie that he’s ready to start working with a writing team and cut a record. He would have no problem finding a major artist to add him to his / her tour as an opening act because he has such a good rapport with the audience.

The only way I could watch the X-Factor is with my DVR, and it was an included feature of my cable system, so it didn’t cost me anything extra. It’s worth every penny that I didn’t pay for it. It doesn’t take long at all to watch the show in FF. I wouldn’t watch it otherwise. Like you, I’m really enjoying this season of DWTS and The Voice. Who do you like on DWTS this year?

  44. Karl,
That was a good report on Panda and my first reaction to putting her in a group was the same as yours. Then I remembered a group that is currently the buzz on the late night shows and making a name for themselves with an unconventional black female lead singer called “Alabama Shakes.” Simon was probably thinking of something along those lines when he created that group. Of course there are a lot of contestants that we have never heard of but I can’t imagine who they would pair her with in a group.

I’m glad to hear that she is well and her health is improving. We have a couple of good possibilities for a wildcard this year.

The video is a trip. Look out Simon, Panda is on the prowl.

  45. Hey All

As you guys know and as I have said many times here, I’m definitely not a fan of country music. Having said all of that … I agree with you all about Tate. He, in my opinion is the most refined singer out of the entire bunch, even though its not my style.
Who I like is Jason Brock. It reminds me a lot of how I felt about Joshua Ledet on Idol last season. I liked him a lot but I knew he wouldn’t win. I really like Jason’s style. He;s different. I can’t think of any singer to compare him to in R&B circles, because thats where he is. And as I said before, Its rare these days for an R&B’r to win AND these audiences LOVE their country singers. so to me Tate is one everybody should look out for.

As far as The Voice and Dancing with the Stars …. I got off of both of those trains. I never was a fan of “The Voice” but I tried to get on board this season and watched about 6 or 7 episodes. Just didn’t do it for me. DWTS, this is the very first season that I haven’t watched. I think I’m getting a case of “talent show burn out”. So for me I’ll just stick with , X-factor and next year Idol and AGT. (This year I even put Duets in) Thats 4 talent shows over a years time. Too much !! If Im feeling better next year may be I’ll try to fit another in.

Glad you guys like Panda. Alabama Shakes huh? I’m going to check them out. Panda is just so funny to me. In the interview I read , she said made sure she was looking at Simon the whole time she sang at his house and then when she got his attention she took her hair down and he turned as red as an apple . 🙂

  47. Gosh! The only way I can think of that Panda found herself in a group was:

They are wanting a big ta-do over bringing her back as a wild card

We already have a predestined and they didn’t want her messing with that…but if that is it, there’s two that I can think of that will probably be top two and that is Carly and Tate, I dunno!!!

  48. So! Now I am wondering…was Panda’s voice that deep and rich or was it because of the pneumonia??? Tnat could be why we didn’t see her any more during boot camp, huh?

  49. Hey Vonnie

Well … above there is both, “with pneumonia” and “after” clips above. In my opinion they both sound just as good. (The last one is without good acoustics, mics, or dubbed for TV). From my understanding though, she did great at the judges house, even though she was not familiar with the song. What Iv’e heard was that there just wasn’t enough time to air all the group auditions. Thats happens a lot of times on these shows. I remember on Idol Jessica never appeared on the show until a couple of months in on the group auditions and she had already come a great distant in the competition. …so you never know. We’ll just have to see. I do know this though …there are a lot of mean people online talking about the way that she looks and if the producers think thats a reflection on how people will vote, they may have just let her go. I’m just remembering though, they did the same thing about Susan Boyle. Its hard to say . I don’t know if Tate or Carly will win but I’d shocked not to see them among the last few standing. Both to me are incredible.

Gene, Thanks for the clips of Alabama Shakes. I definitely wasn’t expecting a group like. They are somewhat of a band. I don’t know if we’ll ever see what actually happened with Panda ‘s group and from what I understand now, the shows that we missed last week and will miss this week, are all going to reduced to a 60 minute show tonight so that WHEN they come back they will be on schedule (and according to my TV schedule it WON”T be next week). So I’m sure there is a lot we won’t see. May be I’ll switch over to “The Voice”. I don’t know how FOX expects X-Factor to keep its high rating if its viewers are going to go over there …while they’re off.

  50. Brotherkarl…yeah! The acoustics are different, maybe that is what’s throwing me off…I love the whole Panda package…what’s wrong with people?????

So x-factor won’t be on next week?

I’ve tried watching the voice, I started watching these shows to late in the season to make any sense out of them…I could catch up on the voice when they go to “live” shows…eh! We’ll see

Gene…I am still trying to play catch up with Dancing too…not going so good!!!

  51. Vonnie,
I suspect that pneumonia would have made her wheeze and or rattle and be short of breath while singing.

You mentioned not being up to speed on DWTS this year. All of the contestants are either winners or popular contestants from previous seasons so you probably know a lot of them that way, if not from their “regular jobs.” They have already gotten to the point in the season where the less capable dancers have gone home and they are all pretty good. The judges were pretty hard on Kelly this week so she may go soon. You said that you liked Tony and Melisa and I like them as well. She could easily be the best dancer in a regular season. They introduce her as a TV host but I haven’t seen her on TV. Do you know where she is from?

  52. Karl,
Yeah the Shakes are more of a band but it was the eclectic, off beat nature of Howard’s singing style that I thought might be a direction Panda could go in to find a niche in contemporary music. She is more in the classic R& B to gospel range but I’m not sure they would sign someone to a five million dollar contract in those genres.

I don’t know if you ever watch a show on PBS called “Austin City Limits” but if not they had a good show recently. Each week they have two acts that perform for a half hour each before a live audience in Austin, TX. This week they had Bonnie Raitt who was there as part of her current tour which my wife and I saw here a few weeks ago and the other act was Mavis Staples and her band. Both were great, which was no surprise but they did something unusual for the ACL format in that they came together at the end for a group sing of “May the Circle Be Unbroken.” Good stuff. You can see their programs on line at PBS.org.

  53. Hey Gene:

No I’ve never even heard of that show. I’ll see if I can find it here somewhere. I don;t know Gene , Vonnie…. X-Factor is loosing me. It already comes on at the same time as my favorite show of all time “Survivor”. X-Factor said it would return November 1st but according to our tv schedule here … its not even coming on then. We’ll see. It would seem to me that they would put it on “on Demand ” or something like that. Somebody really blew it in my opinion. I’m going to try to hang on though.

  54. Hey Karl,
Yeah, Austin City Limits is only a few years older than General Hospital, so I can see how you might have missed it. 🙂 There is no telling who might be on the show, from old established artist, to the latest thing. I think the Alabama Shakes have been on ACL too. Watch it here:

I don’t really like the X-Factor very much but I’m addicted to these singing competition shows. The X survives on hype more than anything else. That’s the Simon Factor. I watch it because I’m always interested in hearing someone that’s interesting to me. The competition element of this show is the least believable for me and the use of so much caned music is unacceptable for a show at this level. I haven’t followed the Xs ratings but I was shocked when their contract was extended past the first season so it wouldn’t surprise me if it were canceled.

For me, the Voice has had a good season this year. The battle rounds drug out too long, but for the most part, they were real battles where no clear winner was apparent before they took the stage, and in many cases, after they were finished singing.

My real concern is for American Idol. I’m not sure they will survive with their new judging panel.

But I do recall Melissa then landing a job as a tv host or something like that…hmmmmm some investigating is needed!!!

  56. Gene – I have the same concern about Idol. Its really a bad situation. Having something like what happened to the two ladies this early on the game …..wow …its pretty bad.

  58. Karl,
I don’t know the details of the class of the divas since they have been judging the taped rounds of Idol except that there have been some blow ups. My concern started when they first mentioned that Niki (sp?) what’s her name was under consideration for the judges position. I recall the first time that I had ever seen or heard of her was on the Grammys either last year or the year before. I had quit watching the Grammys several years ago when their interest and mine went in different directions but I begin watching this show and it was very good from start to… the next to the last act. Then came Nikki to ruin the show. That one sighting of her was enough for me to know that she didn’t have the appropriate style or temperament for Idol. I think the other three would be fine and an improvement over the previous crew, but not her.

Yep …to me …Nikki Minaj is the rotten apple in the bunch. Just not a good mix, but I hear there have been no more fueds since the last blow up . The question is when will the next one come
