Vocal Masterclass Discussion For American Idol Top 12 Female Vocalists

I will be travelling today and may miss the Top 12 female vocalists when they perform live to tape tonight.

Therefore, I am counting on all of you to contribute some lively commentary before, during and after the show.

If I happen to be near a wireless hot spot, I will hop in and surprise you.

I really am anxious to hear these young women. Most of them did not receive the airtime comparable to their male counterparts, so I have no idea what they are capable of achieving.

Tonight all of the speculation should be put to rest, as long as that old devil “Nerves” isn’t in the way.

Enjoy the show, everyone!

  2. Overall, I think the girls did better tonight than the guys did. I agree with the judges that Pia was the best of the night, amazing! I also loved Thia’s performance. Huge kudos to her for starting the song singing accapella! I like Karen so much too. I love hearing her sing in Spanish, just wonderful! Ta-Tynisa was a stand out tonight also.

  5. I’m correcting myself. I think Ashton was one of the standouts tonight, not Ta-Tynisa. I know you didn’t like her, Vonnie, but I feel she did a great job!

  6. I enjoyed the girls tonight!

I LOVED Karen’s version of “Hero” – oh my the mix between English and Spanish! I thought it was superb.

I absolutely hated Rachel; it wasn’t even her singing, I think it was more of her stage presence. I got an unfriendly vibe from her. And then her facial expressions when the judges were critiquing her…she seemed unprofessional for me.

The rest of the girls were really good.

  7. Well, here goes with my comments – the young ladies were really great tonight, with only a few misses. A lot of talent in this group!

    1. Ta-Tynisa Wilson – “Only Girl (In The World)” by Rihanna – bad song choice, this is a dance song, not a singing song, also the moving around stage just killed her vocals, doesn’t have enough voice to hold her own with the others.

    2. Naima Adedapo – “Summertime” – gutsy move, changed it up to a jazzy version, great stage presence and confidence, strong vocals and props for holding that pitch as she moved around onstage, will she be able to win over America with her unique style.

    3. Kendra Chantelle – “Impossible” by Christina Aguilera – did a good job with strong vocals, a few sharp notes, but altogether a decent vocal.

    4. Rachel Zevita – “Criminal” by Fiona Apple – not a good song choice at all, she left me cold, too many affectations, too much movement on stage going behind the judges which killed her vocals altogether, self-indulgent performance, did not connect with me at all.

    5. Karen Rodriguez – “Hero” by Mariah Carey (sung half in Spanish) – risky song choice, it’s almost a cliche at this point because it’s been done to death, risked comparison to Mariah Carey, vocals were strong and solid, the Spanish part was a lovely changeup to make it her own, we will have to see if America will buy another rendition of this song.

    6. Lauren Turner sings “Seven Day Fool” by Etta James (Jully Black’s version) – gritty vocals, lots of power and attitude, a baby Etta James, sassy, confident, great charisma on stage, didn’t move around a lot and made sure to nail her vocals, good job.

    7. Ashton Jones – “Love Over Me” by Monica – okay vocals, seemed to strain in parts with some pitch issues, didn’t feel the connection.

    8. Julie Zorrilla – “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson – bad song choice as I feared, way too big for her voice, this is a song that needs power, struggled throughout the performance, this is a shame because she has a great voice but this will really hurt her chances.

    9. Haley Reinhart – “Fallin” by Alicia Keyes – this is a tough song to pull off, tricky to sing, strong vocals, too many extra runs, needs to be careful not to oversing.

    10. Thia Megia – “Out Here On My Own” from Fame – brilliant acapella beginning! Kudos to Randy for pointing out that incredible tone in her voice, perfect song choice, right on pitch all the way, poised and confident and really had a moment.

    11. Lauren Alaina – “Turn on the Radio” by Reba McEntire- this girl has a ton of charisma, confidence and stage presence for a sixteen year old, great voice, didn’t love the chorus in the background, has more potential than this song allowed us to see.

    12. Pia Toscano – “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders – the performance of the night! This is not an easy song to pull off, but she really brought the vocals and connected with the song, told a story, great emotion and feeling, the high notes at the end were strained (MCL will have something to say about not raising your head for those notes, it compromises the vocal chords!), showed the power and range of her voice, amazing!

  8. Hi Anita,

I put no comment on Ashton because I have not formed an opinion of her as of yet! I really couldn’t remember her going in to last night, plus I didn’t know the song she was singing! I didn’t mind her performance, I will just hold comments on her until we either get to hear her again, or she goes home!

Gosh, I wish more than 6 of each of these could stay! The only girl that I do not like is Rachel, and I didn’t like her at auditions! I wish they all could stay and continue to sing!

  9. My favorites of the night were Thia, Pia and Lauren Turner. (Yes, I mean Turner!) I hope Lauren Turner stays around because I think she could be very entertaining.

Lauren Alaina also did a really good job, and Karen sounded terrific too. And I really liked Naima. That’s it for me. Hope these girls make it.

  10. Here are my top 6 for girls night: Pia, Lauren T, Thia, Naima, Rachel (wildcard).

I don’t even like Rachel’s voice or any of her previous renditions. But I think there’s something truly unique to her style (vocal as well as fashion) and I would like to see some diversity in the final 12. So there.

  11. Vonnie,

I’m sorry, I misunderstood you. It really bothers me that they are going from 24 to 12 contestants tonight. I’ve always looked at American Idol as a growing process as artists for the contestants. This new way of doing things eliminates that chance for growth, and it doesn’t give us a chance to know them better as artists.

  12. Anita,

    No problem!!! 🙂

I should have put in my post that I wasn’t sure who she was…it did make it sound like I was dismissing her, sorry!

I don’t like this new way of elimination either! I feel bad for these kids! It really makes it hard to have favorites, because you are not sure if they will make the cut.
