A Temporary Change Of Heart Followed By A New Beginning

On Tuesday, June 8th at approximately 9:20 P.M., I experienced a heart attack. It was sudden, it was intense and, over the last couple of weeks, it became a life-changing experience for me.

I am fortunate to live very close to our hospital; therefore, my husband was able to deliver me to the ER in record time.

After I arrived, I was quickly transferred to the ICU where I was monitored by excellent medical staff both in Timmins, Ontario and, later in the week, in Sudbury Ontario.

I am now recuperating under a doctor’s supervision, surrounded by the support and love of family members and friends.

Thank heavens for the Internet! Since I cannot stray too far from home, it allows me to reach out and embrace each and every one of you no matter the time of day or night.

And I am very thankful that we have government subsidized healthcare for all.

During my stay in both hospitals, I realized the importance of this, becoming acutely aware that all patients, regardless of age, color or socio-economic background received the same impeccable treatment and guidance from a first-rate medical team.

It was so comforting to behold – to know that, in a medical crisis, one’s health determines the quantity and consistency of care and not how deeply you can dig through your pockets. The quality is always there, but the level of monitoring increase substantially after one experiences a cardiac event.

Even assigning the limited number of TVs in the ICU unit in Sudbury was determined by your acute health status. One day, as I passed another patient’s room during my early evening walk, I noticed that an extremely ill patient, whom I knew was from a less privileged background, was able to enjoy the only large screen television set on the floor.  It brought a smile to my face and a sense of comfort.

And so, my recovery process begins. I am taking it slow and very easy, taking solace in the words of my doctor who emphasized that, with time and good care, I will eventually be able to lead a normal, productive life.

However, he cautioned me to maintain a relaxed, less stressful approach in my daily activities. The heart attack was symbolic of working the ‘ole body too hard and one always must be aware of this.

However, for now, I cannot lift anything remotely heavy. Could somebody out there please come and vacuum my house?  Kidding of course – well sort-of!  I can still punch in phone numbers for a cleaning service.  It’s on my “to-do” list tomorrow.

Happy and Healthy Sunday, everyone, and Happy Father’s Day to the Dads out there!

You are lucky to have your health system! I’m an RN in the US and wish we would be compassionate and wise enough to take care of our own like Canada does. The bottom line is that prevention and quick treatment save dollars when it comes to health care.
Don’t worry about your “dirty” house. When you think about it, it’s not a priority. Hope to see you back to your normal level of activity as soon as safely possible! 🙂

  4. Renee, Julia and Hanna – thank you so much. I am very tired and the doctors feel that I will feel that way for a few months. It’s the norm after a heart attack. But I will heed your wonderful advice and stay focused on the prize – to live a healthy, well-balanced life, with as little stress as possible.

Hanna – I thoughr President Obama made important changes to the health legislation, similar to Canada? I guess it is still not all-encompassing. What a shame.

I, too, am glad that you have Health Care in Canada. Every country should have it, but being from the United Sates, we don’t have one yet.

Anyway, your health is the issue and I pray that you recover fully.
Love your site. You are a “Master Class” lady in every way.

  9. Hello & thank you so much for letting us know what happened & how you are doing. As a health care provider in the United States, I am reminded on a daily basis of how broken our system is & of how much we could learn from Canada if we would open our eyes (well, I actually think my eyes are pretty open but others aren’t :)). I am so very glad you are doing well & most important of all that you are in good spirits. Please keep us updated.

  10. Hi everyone, once again

I am sitting outside, simply relaxing. Thnak you so much for taking the time to stop by with your “get well”. They mean so much to me.

Here’s hoping that the US can enjoy the enormous health benefits that we often take for granted here in Canada. We still encounter problems here and there , but, when it comes down to critical care, the quality is simply amazing.

    Love to all of you!

  11. Dear MCL:

I am so sorry to read of the challenge you have been given. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you as you learn to enjoy recovery. Sometimes when we don’t slow down our pace, our body does is for us. I had a sense something was wrong as your last posting was Memorial Day in the USA. Please take this time to recover nicely and to make changes that will improve your quality of life. Not that you need more to do, but I will suggest two things that will warm your heart and make any stress you may have melt away. Listen to the following video of David Archuleta singing Be Still My Soul that he sang at his concert yesterday, and read his new book “Chords of Strength”. Chapters 8-11 are just simply amazing.

Thanks for your interesting blog. It is a joy to visit but not at the cost of your health or life. Pace yourself my friend.

    With warmest regards, Dave

Rest assured that if you, or anyone else, had a heart attack, or any other acute medical crisis, in the US, you would have received immediate care in any hospital in the US that accepts funds from the Federal government for any reason. It is required by law to treat indigent emergency cases. That has been the case for over thirty years.

I will pray for your full recovery. Be well Rosanne.

MCL….how shocking to hear of your attack! I’m so very thankful you live so close to a hospital and your care was swift and mighty! God bless you on your recovery. It IS life-changing, but God takes EVERY situation and can make it wonderful. I know you realize this and your life will shine because of it. So glad you shared your health crisis with us as I know it made me stop and think of the crazy schedule I maintain. Thank you!

If you feel open to share, could you let us know (especially for your female audience) the symptoms you experienced? I’ve heard they don’t necessarily match the male version of heart attack symptoms.

I’m thankful you have David Archuleta’s ‘Be Still My Soul’ from his Idaho show Saturday. I know this will help your healing! 🙂

Take care – you mean so much to us!
