Tonight’s Top 4 show has the potential to be an exciting showcase. The remaining Top 4 singers, Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Danny Gokey and Kris Allen, will be performing one solo and one duet.

This is a first for American Idol and probably the most exciting new feature implemented into this year’s innovative format. It will allow the viewers to evaluate the singers with a new set of criteria, one that draws attention to the complete fusion of the duet partners through every aspect of their performance.

Was one singer stronger? How cohesive was the blend? Did they add harmony to the framework of the original composition and, if so, did they stay in tune? What about the dynamics -was one singer more expressive, the other less so? How well did the singers interact with each other?

These are the questions that will be going through my mind as I observe the singers in the innovative duet format this evening. I can’t wait!

Tonight’s guest mentor is former Guns ‘N Roses guitarist, Slash and he has been tweeting his positive impressions of the Top 4 singers. We shall soon see if his predictions carry weight, but I am expecting a great deal from the singers given the spirit of the genre.

Best of luck to all the singers and to my readers, enjoy the show! And, if you haven’t yet done so, visit and follow my Twitter page for further updates!

Important Update: The singers are performing without benefit of a dress rehearsal due to a terrible accident involving the production’s stage manager this afternoon on the Idol set.

Our prayers are extended to her for a speedy recovery.

Hey, Adam could do a Quiet Riot song. “Bang your Head” would be a good one!

  4. Adam and Allison were so cute together! Little sister. They were so happy playing off each other. I love Adam, NOT just because he’s such a great singer and performer, but b/c he is sooo genuine. He roots for all of his fellow performers and makes them better. THAT’s what makes a great artist, sort of like a great athlete. Ie – a Michael Jordon or Derek Jeter makes the team around him better.

As for Adam, I’m not sure anyone else could’ve done that Led Zepplin song without slaughtering it. He killed it!

  6. Adam rocked it. Rock is all about the attitude and lifestyle. He is going to be a HUGE star. OMG. Unbelievable talent. AI really scored this year with him. I’ll bet they’re seeing $$$$$.

Allison was also pretty good. Loved the duet with Adam.

Kris showed his lack of versatility. Not crazy about the song choice. It just didn’t work for me.

Danny was just not “real” to me tonight. Rock is an attitude and he picked the wrong song.

All in all we have a pretty good top 4 this year.

Adam is my fave Idol ever, so I’d say I’m very happy with this season. LOL. What a superstar.

  11. Jessica, I thought Danny sounded pretty off, too. I think he wasn’t able to hear himself well…maybe the lack of rehearsal hurt him. To me he had the weakest performance of the night. That last “scream” had to be spot on, and it did not sound good.

Of course, as the judges said, this was Adam’s wheelhouse, and he was perfect. (I would rather listen to fingernails on a blackboard than that variety of rock, but he is a total master of the genre–I admire his talent and performance skills enormously.)

Kris’s energy is not right for mainline rock, so he came across as weak–but he sang well, and threw himself into it. Also he did manage to hang on to his own personality, and I give him kudos for that.

And Allison did a very nice job with a rather untuneful song–if she hadn’t sung after Adam, she would have sounded better, but that was a strong impression she made, and her vocals sounded very strong

  13. I am also not a classic-rock fan, particularly – although I can appreciate a rock master when i see (hear?) one and Adam sure is it. I hope though that, contrary to the judges’ suggestions, he does NOT do a rock CD at the expense of ballads and other songs that showcase his beautiful melodic vocals, emotional expression, and insane range.

  14. Oh, I love classic rock! Adam and Allison were spot on. Kris was ok. Danny was bad. It was like watching a granny sing the Sex Pistols or something.

I think Allison had good projection tonight (in her character/performance). I could her looking side long and smiling in between phrases. I like the new haircut and the highlights in the magenta. (yay – Adam’s hair stylist) He really is her big brother isn’t he?

  15. Adam was the best. Come on his Whole Lotta of Love was amazing. Vocal, swagger, style etc. Adam just has that “IT” Factor.

Danny was HORRIBLE. He screamed in the duet, he was flat, sharp and wretched on Dream On.

    Allison was oh so good.

Kris out of his element but good.

  17. Audrey, I didn’t want to go there with Danny’s performance b/c I know some people here like him, but I agree with you, his performance was really bad. Completely wrong song choice and he just doesn’t have the attitude of a rocker. That scream at the end was all sorts of wrong too. Adam makes the screaming/rock wail look easy, but when u compare it to what Danny did, it clearly isn’t as easy as it looks.

I predict Danny & Kris b2, with Kris going home, unfortunately.

  18. I really enjoyed the show tonight, but the judges are making me want to pull my hair out.

Adam – I tried to talk myself into how they could clear Led Zeppelin for Idol, but never quite believed they would/could. Good lord, am I happy that they did. Friggin’ amazing. Perfect song and awesome performance. And way to go, Slash, for that spot-on advice for Adam to use his lower register more! If he’d gone *completely* nuts on this with his high register it could have drifted into “indulgent” territory, but this was perfect.

Allison – Janis was a little predictable for her, yes, but I thought she killed it. Second-best solo performance of the night, if you ask me, and I’m glad that she spoke up for herself at the end. But I like her anyway, so her defense didn’t strike me as obnoxious. If I didn’t already like her, I might have hated that. Heh. I’m not sure where Randy got the “no melody” thing from, though, because the verses were nuanced and fabulous.

Danny/Kris duet – What a world of difference between these two and what we saw from Adam/Allison, and I’m not even referring to vocal quality. A/A clearly enjoyed performing with one another, but this looked like they were forced to sing together and they couldn’t wait for it to be over. I feel like Simon was off here – they both had a few pitch issues, but I actually thought Kris looked MUCH more comfortable up there and workin’ the mic stand than Danny did.

Kris – I really liked this! But I love that song anyway. I’m glad Randy pointed out the excellent guitar playing, too. Kris knows full-well that he can’t compete vocally with the other contestants, and I’m glad that he doesn’t try to. It’s a “vibe” thing with him. I liked Kris’ voice, enjoyed the rocked-out arrangement (it almost reminded me of Soundgarden’s version with the heavier guitars), and loved that he managed to stay true to both a theme that doesn’t suit him AND himself at the same time. Contrast that with…

Danny – The other “this theme doesn’t suit you” contestant. Compared to Kris, I thought this suffered tremendously. I feel like I know what kind of album Kris would release, but I have no idea what Danny would do, so there’s that. But this was weirdly disconnected, and the scream at the end just didn’t work. Though I do love what this brings up, mainly those who criticize Adam for his “screeching” – compare that scream to what Adam does. It’s night and day, and even if the Robert Plant-style wailing Adam does isn’t your cup of tea, it’s an extremely difficult thing to do and still be tuneful and listenable, which Danny unfortunately was not. Not a good song choice for him at all.

And what bothered me so much about the judging of Kris and Danny — I don’t know why Danny still got the, “A-plus for effort! We still love you!”-style critiques while Kris ended up with, “We like you, but that was bad” treatment. Well, I DO know why, but that doesn’t mean that I have to like it.

The Adam/Allison duet was pure fun and a pleasure to watch and listen to. Loved every second of it.

I couldn’t have said it better myself! What a talent Adam is! Fantastic, and I bet this duet will be included in the tour. They rocked the house! Both Adam and Allison deserve to be in the finals. I really like the big brother/little sister vibe.

Gotta love the redhead! Janis Joplin was a perfect choice for her! I liked the idea of Allison playing Janis in her bio film! It’s been in the works for nearly 8 years. I believe her sister is to be a co-prouducer. Plus, there is a resemblence between the two of them.

I really do like Kris’ choice of song. I’ll give him credit for giving it his best shot. I would love to see him in the TOP 3; however, Danny’s fan base will be working hard to make sure Danny doesn’t go home.

What can I say about Danny? It was the worse performance of the night. Wrong song choice and really bad ending. I think ir was wrong to question the judges’ critique. Kris handled it so much better.

I am a fan of classic rock but wish someone would have done a Journey song.

  20. Adam was brilliant tonight. Oh my gosh! Wow. I really love the way Adam interpreted that song. Slash’s feedback was spot-on. I feel that for the first time, Adam didn’t come off as “over-the-top” or “showboating,” and yet, he still got to show off his range. The high notes were very tastefully done. Major props to you, Adam.

Also, something has to be said about his humility. It is a shame that some people can’t see past the makeup and his lifestyle—whatever—to realize that he’s actually a very nice guy. He is always so genuinely gracious and grateful for the judges’ comments.

Unfortunately, I found Allison’s performance to be rather subpar. She was consistently flat on the “cry baby” parts. This cover by Alisan Porter is absolutely brilliant, and after hearing her version, Allison’s version fell completely short for me. Alisan Porter sang the song in a higher key and hit the high notes with such clarity. And what interpretation! I don’t think the song (lack of melody or whatnot) can be used as an excuse after watching this version.

That said, Allison has a great personality (I don’t know why the judges keep on saying that she doesn’t), and she’s right—”Piece of My Heart” is so overdone. I’m glad that she didn’t cover that song. I do feel that this bluesy rock is a good vein of music for her, like Kara said. I know that I can be rather difficult on Allison concerning her vocal technique because right now, her technique is very lacking. With proper training and a few years, though, Allison could be very good, though. I’ll definitely give her that; the potential is there.

  23. Season 8 said, “Audrey, I didn’t want to go there with Danny’s performance b/c I know some people here like him, but I agree with you, his performance was really bad.”

I do like Danny, but I wasn’t impressed with his performance tonight either–I wish he hadn’t tried the scream at the end because it sounded as though his voice was hoarse. MCL has already previously mentioned her concern about this. But really did anyone expect Rock night to go well for Danny and Kris?

And what a coincidence that Adam got to end the show again–even if it was doing a duet with Allison. The duet with Adam and Allison seemed like a set-up to ultimately get an Adam/Allison finale. It’s so obvious that Adam is Idol’s chosen one this year. It reminds me very much of Season 2 with Rueben and Season 3 with Fantasia. There was really no need to watch the end of Idol because they made sure their favorites won. I will be completely shocked if Adam doesn’t win this year.

I actually agree with you there. I feel that Simon’s comment comparing the two was unnecessary. Kris and Danny each had something to offer in this performance. Kris was out of his depth vocally, but goodness, I love his tone! Pitch problems but gorgeous tone. I wish Kris could get in contact with a good vo to work out the tension in his voice because I don’t think it’s difficult to fix; he just has to shake off a lot of bad habits. The raw instrument there—his vocal tone—is just lovely.

Kariann1 – I would have loved to hear a Journey song too, but I can’t imagine anyone doing Steve Perry justice. His voice is so powerful and rich. I get chills just thinking about it, lol!

  26. J, you are right. Now I am sitting thinking which Idol (from all seasons) could have done justice to Journey – Steve Perry?

Louise, I do hate the ‘pimping’ but I really didn’t think Ruben or Fantasia were the best singers from their seasons. I do think Adam does deserve it. Actually, he didn’t need all the manipulations. Sometimes, I wish they would get rid of a few of these judges next season!

  27. J, thanks for posting the Alisan Porter video. She really is incredible and you’re right, shows how much more dimension there can be to this song than what Allison did (although I do like her). I just had to take a quick look in Wikipedia about Porter – she was the youngest Star Search winner at age 5, and was in The Ten Commandments (as Miriam) along with Adam.

Pointing out an earlier quote. *nods* I think, no matter who one’s favorite is, we all have to admit that as the competition winds down, the judges tend to be rather manipulative with their comments. Simon actually admitted this. He said something along the lines that near the end, he doesn’t really give honest critiques so much as indications to the voting public who he thinks should win. I believe this was an Access Hollywood interview. Does anyone else remember reading this same article/watching the video? I am sincere in saying that I didn’t make this up, but I can’t remember the reference off the top of my head.

Kariann1 – Exactly! I am trying to brainstorm now myself, lol. I know that Journey has been done on the show before, but one can debate about whether Journey was done justice. Hmmm, this is tough. There have been some excellent male vocalists on the show, but Steve Perry’s voice is truly in a class of its own.

Nanine – No problem! =) I am glad that someone else enjoyed it as well; it is such a shame that Alisan isn’t more well-known with a voice like that. And thank you for for that information; that really clarifies Adam’s connection to Alisan!

Awww, Adam and Allison looked like they had so much fun in their duet! During the judges’ comments, I just kept on thinking, “Awww, how brotherly!” and this was before Adam said he thought of Allison as his little sister. (Sorry this comment is all over the place, lol!)

  29. Kariann1 . . . I do agree that Adam is extremely talented and certainly is a very professional performer compared to any of the others. But I just personally don’t like some of the music that he sings–including what he did tonight–(or what most of them sang tonight).

As for “deserving” it, I think the person who deserves it is the one who gets the most votes. If that’s Adam, then so be it. If by chance it’s not Adam, then I don’t think that Adam’s fans should complain. I think it is ridiculous that some of Clay’s fans from Season 2 still insist that he really should have won. The fans of the second place finisher just need to accept the outcome and move on.

  30. Well, as a loyal Danny fan, I can still admit that tonight wasn’t one of his greatest performances ever. However, here is the bottom line. He (and Kris) were two fish out of water. Since the very beginning of this competition, Adam has always been the “Glam Rock Guy”, while Allison has been the “Rocker Chick”. Of course THOSE two would have the best performances tonight. It is only natural. I thought Kris’s performance (God bless him) was very boring and forgettable. Danny admittedly did probably pick the wrong song choice. However, I found his performance far more MEMORABLE than the rest, and it was the only truly recognizable Rock song I heard tonight apart from Slow Ride. Call me strange, but I actually liked his note at the end! Anyway, it was still my favorite performance just because it is one of my favorite songs. Go Danny! You didn’t do AS BAD as everybody is saying. You’re just experiencing backlash because you are the frontrunner.

I really am not too worried for Danny tomorrow. He (in all honesty) may not be the top vote getter, but he will certainly be safe. There were A LOT of busy signals on his phone line. I really do think Kris will go home. I like him, but to me, his was just the weakest performance of the night.

  31. Well, Adam came out swinging. I say good for him! I just never thought they could get clearance for a Led Zeppelin song. Thank God it happened! He was unbelievable. It’s like he was born to sing that song! A big thank you to Slash for his suggestion about Adam staying in the lower register and not doing too much with the higher notes. Brilliant and spot on! Adam listened and the performance totally worked! He did what you must do if you have to sing first – come out there and set the bar so high that everyone else has to struggle just to compete with you. This was his moment and I am glad that he decided to stay true to who he is. Whatever happens, I am thrilled with Adam’s performance!

As for Allison, I must agree with J’s comments regarding her performance. Janis Joplin was very special to me. She wasn’t with us nearly long enough, but she sure left us with a lot to remember! A truly one of a kind female rock vocalist who has never really be surpassed. This song highlighted Allison’s youth and vocal issues. She is just not there yet and that’s okay. That’s why I keep saying that she needs time to learn vocal technique and develop. She can be a great artist in a few years. If you take on Janis Joplin, you better nail it. Unfortunately, she didn’t quite get the job done.

Kris was always going to have a tough time this week. I think it’s awfully risky to take on the Beatles. If you do, as with Janis Joplin, then you have to be sure you make it great. Kris is struggling with his vocals right now, so once again I was not able to fully enjoy his performance.

J – Kudos to you for saying exactly what I was thinking and have always thought about Kris. Yes, I do love the timbre and sound of his voice, but he just has to relax that jaw and neck. It kills his vocals every single time. He just kind of got lost in this song, But I do love his phrasing and the musical arrangement. This guy can play that guitar.

Danny really reached way too high and fell far short. I can’t pull back on an honest critique of his performance for fear of hurting the feelings of his supporters. I have to call it as I see it. There were pitch problems all through the performance and Danny was really straining his voice. His issues with vocal technique were never more evident than they were tonight. But the worst, the absolute worst, was that last note. Again, Slash was right about Danny having to hit that note and saying it could go either way. So he had his doubts. Also, Danny doesn’t have to listen to it again, he KNEW he didn’t hit that note. But what else could he do? That’s the first time that he has sounded kind of defensive.

I have to say that I loved Adam and Allison’s duet. They were so well suited to each other! They both were obviously having a lot of fun and feeding off each other. Great to see!

As for the duet with Kris and Danny, for me it just did not work. I don’t like the fact that Simon said that Danny was better. That was not the case. They both had their vocal issues and it was just a case of their voices and styles not meshing well together. That’s why the duet idea was kind of silly.

    Louise –

I am disappointed that you think the judges were pimping Adam again. Isn’t it possible that they just think he is really THAT good? I’d like to think so. Even though Adam sang last, he shared the spotlight. In so doing, he may well have helped Allison because they were so fantastic together.

When it comes to pimping, how about Simon coming right out and saying that Danny was better than Kris? How about the judges praising Danny even though his solo performance was just plain bad? So please don’t go saying that only one person is being pimped.

As for that issue about Adam screaming, well tonight we saw Danny show us how it is NOT done. I hope that people may appreciate just how hard it is to do it and do it right. Adam is the gold standard and it’s not easy, only he manages to make it look easy.

“Debbie the Stage manager fell down a 20 f00t staircase. She was taken out of Idol rehearsal in a neck brace on a stretcher. She was waving and smiling as she left.

After, Ryan Seacrest apologized for the delay, and was just about to get dress rehearsal underway….When–completely unrelated to Debbie’s accident–one of the giant “American Idol” globes began to crackle and hiss. It exploded and glass and debris came crashing to the ground. There was panic and screaming and push.

The stage was broken and covered with debris. Peeps were freaking out. Ryan attempted to calm everyone down. Then they cleared the studio… ”

LOL! I have to be honest. I think I preferred what Danny did tonight more than what Adam always does!

And, yes, Adam is pimped quite a bit. There were THREE instances tonight that Adam was most certainly pimped.

    1) After he finished singing his performance, Simon said NO ONE else could stand a chance of topping it. How is that supposed to make everyone else feel?

    2) After Danny sang, Simon commented on how “Adam is better than you”. Long story short, that was what he said.

    3) In Adam’s and Allison’s duet, Simon told Allison that Adam just may have saved her tonight. That is somewhat amusing to me considering that Adam was in the Bottom 2 last week, while Allison was in the Top 2! Perhaps she saved him? Is that too inconceivable?

Look, I like Adam and he did great tonight. However, as I said he and Allison were in their element. Danny has never truly been in his element. He loves Christian music, but you all know American Idol will probably never go there. So, considering he will never get a chance to shine where he would shine the brightest, I am proud of him tonight. He took a risk with “Dream On,” and it may not have worked out perfectly, but I admire his guts.

  36. I thought Danny’s last screech was horrific and the sad thing is he had no idea just how bad it sounded.

And then Danny-boy had the audacity to fight with the judges about it. Danny said to the judges (and I am paraphrasing here) “I will have to go listen to it and see if you are right” Talk about smug, Danny beats Cook’s supposed smugness by a country mile. LOL
Gokey is smug to the core.

I think Gokey was shocked the judges actually were criticizing him (for once). Danny is lucky they pulled their punches… He was as bad as if not worse than Kris, but you would never know that from the judges’ comments.

  37. Galen, I agree that everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions. *nods* Enjoyment is purely subjective. Vocal technique is

highly objective, though, and I just wanted to make a distinction between the two. Yes, Danny has experienced frontrunner

backlash to some degree (just as Adam has), and I do not doubt that there are people out there who simply dislike all his

    performances for no good reason.

However, frontrunner backlash is not the only reason for the negative comments on his performance. Objectively,

some people hear technical issues with his performance, and that was the point I was trying to communicate by quoting MCL.

People are not always “just expressing their opinions”; sometimes, they are stating objective truths as well. And I just think we should be discerning of the difference. That is all. Not every negative comment is motivated by ill intent.

    Cook’s supposed smugness

I am glad you put “supposed” here. I feel that people sometimes confuse confidence with arrogance, but when given a point of comparison, one can see the difference pretty clearly. (I am not commenting on anyone in particular here, just making a general comment.) My two cents: I never got the sense that David Cook was smug. He always received compliments from the judges so graciously. I didn’t see any sense of entitlement in him. And just seeing how he dealt with his brother’s illness and death… David Cook is an upstanding guy. That is all I can say.

  40. Danny, Danny, Danny … this song was just NOT good, in any way. First, (IMHO) you pulled the Lost My Wife Card again with the lyrics to Dream On, “… everybody has their dues in life to pay … maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away …”. I’m SO tired of feeling like I’m supposed to feel sorry for him; I do, but I don’t want it rubbed in my face. It’s a music competition, not a therapy session.

Second, yet another pair of glasses … I think he’s up to about $3,000 in frame now (really).

Lastly (thank the gods it WAS last) that final note. Not so good. He did pretty well in practice with Slash, but you could tell by Slash’s after-comment and the look on his face and twinkly in his eye that he wasn’t expecting much good to come of it. Danny stopped the song and looked like a whipped puppy, but then ‘talked back’ to the judges … I’m confused.

  41. I want to make this perfectly clear. I stand 100% behind what I said. I said in an objective and completely honest manner, what I heard about Danny’s last note. It was simply put, abominable. He blew it. I also have issues with some of Danny’s behavior on stage, but I have refrained from discussing them, so as to to detract from my critiques of his performances.

I knew I was going to get some grief for stating what I heard, but my musical ear hears what it hears. That’s why I can sing with perfect pitch. I can’t come on here and not speak the truth. I am grateful that MCL also heard what I obviously heard, but when it comes right down to it, I know what I heard. It’s not a personal attack on Danny. I would hope that it would be perceived that way.

This was the first time that Danny has ever talked back to the judges. I think I know why. When he listens to it again, he will hear what I heard.

J – Thanks for saying it so well.

  44. Galen- while I also can applaud Danny’s effort in attempting something that is clearly not in his normal comfort zone, I must disagree with you on one thing.
I don’t believe that Adam and Allison were “naturally” going to be the best of the night or that Danny and Kris were “fish out of water” They all had an equal chance at making an impact and should all be judged by the same standards.
Rock comes in many different styles and there are so many songs that Danny and Kris could have picked that would be more suitable for their voices. I personally would have loved to hear Kris sing Bob Dylan or Pink Floyd. As for Danny- with his raspy tone, there are any number of rock songs that would have been perfect for him. I think he would have been wonderful if he had picked a song by say, Rod Stewart or Steven Perry. The fact is that he simply picked the wrong song, and I don’t believe that the theme should be used as an excuse
Let’s all not forget rock week last season, when everyone presumed David Archuleta to be the fish out of water going into that week, and he ended up stealing the show.

You are spot-on in so many ways (including the comment about covering Janis). I feel that you are both honest and kind-hearted, and I hope that you are not upset by some of the comments in here. I greatly admire your grace under pressure. Thanks for taking the high road.

Lindsey – Great points. Another way to look at your point is this: contestants don’t always do well even with themes considered “right in their court.” For example, oddly enough, Carrie Underwood tended to struggle with overtly country songs on Idol. (“Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”) Genre is no guarantee either way.

  46. First off I have to say I’m really praying for Debbie the Stage Manager. That’s one hell of a bad fall she took today. I hope she recovers well and speedily. I’m sending healing thoughts in her direction.

As for Rock night – I loved it! But then that’s right up my alley. I’m an Adam fan from the get go. As far as I’m concerned Adam could have sung an entire concert tonight and I’d have been happy as a clam. But it wasn’t all about Adam – or it shouldn’t be – so I understand why some may feel he’s being favored. In the end – it’s about the Benjamin’s, I’m afraid – not the singing. Adam represents money – and TPTB are milking that cow for all the butter and cream he can produce. Not cool. But they’ve done this before with other singers – tried to manipulate the outcome. Frankly – I think they wanted Archuleta to win last season. And way back in season two it was Clay that got dissed. However you slice it – the cuts are always uneven.

It affects the criticism too. Kris’s solo tonight was much better than he was given credit for – as was Allison’s (though she seemed really nervous and tentative). Her duet with Adam rocked the house, however. Adam’s partnering skills are truly superb. He kept his performance attuned specifically to Allison – not showing off – which was what went wrong between Kris and Danny. Ah – Kris and Danny! What a trainwreck! They battled each other – with Danny fighting for the lead. In the end – Danny mowed Kris flat. Adam and Allison sang TOGETHER. That’s what made it such a treat. That’s why I think it’s Danny that’s going home, by the way. Not just his dreadful solo (judges inexplicable positive commentary aside). It’s the way he slammed over Kris in the duet. That was very selfish of him IMO. Duets are give and take – not vocal competition (that’s for the solos). It’s like tossing a ball back and forth. The idea is to make it sound seamless. Kris and Danny weren’t – and didn’t Kris look unhappy afterward! I felt rather sorry for him. Danny too, actually. He seemed really out of his element. But that’s what these themes are for – to challenge the singers. Look how Adam handled Country week. I must say I wish they’d allowed the singers a little more leeway when it came to interpretation. But you’d think Danny could handle classic rock-n-roll. Kris managed.

Overall – I’m happy – because I got my Glambert back! ‘Ring of Fire’ Adam in all his black leather and lip curling glory! What I would have given to be in that audience!! Hotchacha!

I mean, I was not old enough to know it when it was released, but anyone with any interest in contemporary music has to be aware of the song’s place in rock history. I can only assume that you are a pre-teen and have no appreciation nor understanding of how rock music got to where it is today.

  48. Wow, you guys are night owls…

After reading the comments this morning, Want to express my opinion on two things, this is not directed to anyone! As far as Adam singing rock and being in his element; Adam has sang great this whole season, no matter what the theme. Adam going first and last, in my opinion, it wouldn’t have mattered if Adam went first and second, he would have still been the best of the night. I think for Kris and Danny it boils down to song choice. If Kris would have done “imagine” and Danny did “Beth” from Kiss, they would have done better. I think some of the best ballads came from the rock genre. Nazareth’s “Love Hurts?”

I am an Adam fan and I do understand the frustration of feeling like someone is being pimped over the person that I like (only one season have I liked the person who actually won, and that was Taylor), hopefully it will repeat this year. However, I came to realize that no matter what, this person that I like will go on to do an album and I will buy it. Last year I liked Jason! Each year if you watch with an open heart, there is a person on there who was born to be on that stage. Last year, I didn’t really like either of the David’s, but I know that David C. was the best talent on there, with David A. right behind him. I was just happy that Jason made it as far as he did, and am still waiting patiently for an album.

Just my thoughts! I did get alot of votes in for Adam.

  50. Oh, my, my, there is so much to respond to. First of all, I was really disappointed last night because I think Danny blew it. Earlier in the season I was really trying to remain objective so in remembering that, I was wrong to imply last night that Danny and Kris didn’t do well because it was a Rock theme. I don’t like excuses, so I shouldn’t have made them for Danny. As someone here mentioned, Danny really did err in choosing the wrong song. I listened to the entire show again this morning and I know many of you will disagree, but I didn’t think he sounded horrible until the end of the song when he actually “screamed.” And that was bad, bad, bad.

As for the duet with Danny and Kris, I’ve never pretended to have perfect pitch or know much about singing, but I enjoyed the sound of the two of them singing together. When Kris sang alone, I thought he was much weaker than Danny. And I really think that the comments made by TFLS about this were unnecessarily critical of Danny. What was Danny supposed to do? Do you think he should have brought himself down to Kris’s level? I watched it carefully this morning and I absolutely did NOT think that Kris looked unhappy afterwards. He came over to Danny and gave him a high five! And I think Danny looked VERY uncomfortable when Simon said he sang better than Kris.

Based on Danny’s last “note” last night, he could easily be voted off tonight. But if viewers were thinking of the entire season, I think Kris should be voted off. But I’m really confident that Danny or Kris will be gone tonight. And honestly, I will be shocked if it’s not Adam and Allison in the finale. It was really clear last night that that’s what Idol is trying to achieve. Last night in Simon’s critique of Danny, he said that he would be safe this week. But in “Simon Speak” I think this translates into “so the Danny fans don’t need to vote because your boy is not going anywhere.” I think Simon pulled the same thing last week by saying that Allison might go home–it encouraged her fans to vote and she ended up in the top two. He knows exactly what he is doing when he makes remarks like that.

As for my dislike of this type of rock, I have never, ever liked hard rock, heavy metal, head-banging music or whatever you want to call it. When this music was becoming popular, I had three babies in less than three years (a set of twins included), so I was busy being a Mom. I just never got into it, and I dislike it about as much as I dislike rap now. I will agree if this is your thing, that Adam and Allison did it well.

  51. There was a huge pressure on Adam and Allison considering that it is rock week and for their performances, anything lower than good would probably be seen as poor. I am not a Rock fan at all though Born to Be Wild was my favorite performance of Adam’s. I love listening to Adam’s voice so that is my basis for listening to Whole Lotta Love. I can tell that he is perfectly comfortable, seasoned on that stage and he truly had a great time.

The main difference in the duets was the chemistry. For Kris and Danny, Kris looked miserable and they both seemed uncomfortable. I understand that this is not their element – but if the audience picks up these negative aspects, it will certainly hurt their chances. For Adam and Allison, I just think that they went into great detail, thorough plans, good coordination. I still find it hilarious that Adam introduced her to a new stylist but I love their complementary outfits. What they portrayed in their performances was confidence. If they say “I had fun up there”, this may be the first time I actually believe it because even before the critiques they were congratulating each other. It was wonderful to see how genuine they were.

I just listened to Dream On’s studio recording and I realized that what Danny attempted to do was not easy… he took a risk and he fell short, sorry. I was first appalled that he didn’t realize how bad that last note sounded but it’s a tough note.

This is the truest statement I’ve read here to date, and very similar to one I posted recently about Idol seeing nothing but a big dollar sign when they look at Adam Lambert. While some people pointed out that Adam got to go first and last, what was not pointed out was that Kris and Danny did a duet, then had to go right into doing their solos, while A/A got to wait through three songs before they did their duet. That was just wrong. Each contestant should have gotten as much time as possible to rest between their solo and duet, period. The fairest way to do it would have been to let them all do their solos, then have A/A do their duet followed by K/D’s duet. And to have Adam go first and say that there is no way that the other folks can top that is just a bunch of crap. That is so completely wrong on every level imaginable. Now, if he went last and they said there is just no way no has topped you tonight, that I would have no problem with. But to put that kind of pressure on the other three who are already under pressure most of us can’t imagine, well I’m sorry, it’s just plain wrong. Not to mention, they certainly could have found a better mentor than Slash to help the kids out. Sure, he was a good mentor for Adam, who really doesn’t need any help vocally, but was he a good mentor for the rest of them? Maybe picking someone who has actually had a career singing would be a good start, especially since this is a singing competition.

And I am baffled why everyone so surprised they got clearance to do a Zepplin tune? They (or at least Clive Davis) got the same clearance for Taylor Hicks to do a Bruce Springsteen tune in Season 5. Trust me, if they want one of the Idols to get clearance to do a song badly enough, they have enough pull to talk almost anyone into giving them that clearance, and as we found out, Led Zepplin is no exception.

I thought A/A sounded exceptional singing Slow Ride, and I think too they definitely bring out the best in one another, and it was my favorite song of the night. Kris and Danny harmonized well during their duet and their solo parts were okay, but not at the same level as A/A by any means. I was not a big fan of any of the solos.

Allison was okay, and I was hoping she would do Janis, but I think she should have sung Piece of My Heart or Bobby McGee rather than Cry Baby. And on a personal note, I think Paula is crazy and every once in a while should actually make an attempt to think before she speaks. There certainly are other female singers who would be a much better pick to “play” Janis than Allsion, like let’s say, Joss Stone. I mean really, to tell that girl she should be considered to play Janis when there are others out there who are much more suited for the part is just insane. But that’s Paula for you.

I didn’t feel Kris did quite as badly as the judges said he did. I would rate his performance the same as I would Allison’s, it was okay but could have been better. I don’t think he could have pulled Revolution off either, and if he had done Imagine, he would have been compared to David A., which really would have hurt him. I still think Kris should have done a Steve Perry tune. Much more suited to his style than The Beatles.

Adam was the best of the night, but that’s not saying much considering it is his wheelhouse, and considering how poorly the other three did when they could have done so much better. When he was in Rochester during the Season 5 tour, Chris Daughtry performed “Whole Lotta Love” as one of his numbers, and in my opinion, and I was not a Chris fan, his vocals and delivery of this particular song was 100 times better than Adam Lambert’s ever thought of being. That’s all I have to say about that.

And Galen, my dear, dear Galen. If you haven’t already surmised, you’re my absolute favorite on this site, and I would never want to anger you or hurt your feelings in any way imaginable, but…….I have to be honest and say Danny was my least favorite last night. My guess is that since Adam had already been crowned as a “Rock God,” Danny just figured, why not just go for it and consequences be damned. If you listen to him singing in his “session” with Slash, he actually sounded fairly good, but I think after the judges said what they did about Adam, his desire to do well got the better of him, his nerves took over, and he just reached a little too far. Plus, I think he too picked the wrong song. “Dream On” is a rock classic and if you’re going to do it, you better do it right, and to begin with Danny is not a “rocker” per se’, so he should not have gone down the Steven Tyler road. I would have loved to hear him do CCR’s “Have You Ever Seen The Rain.” I think he could have done very well with a John Forgerty song. He has the perfect voice for it. But Monday morning quarterbacking is always easy, isn’t it, my friend?

Going home? I’d say Kris or Allison.

  54. Now, as far as last night, it was a strange experience for me. I do not listen to rock, nor am I ever going to start.

I can’t critique the performances very well, since I just don’t like rock music. However, Kris and Allison were given less credit than they deserved on their solos. Kris was still Kris, and it worked out for me. Allison did good with that song. Unfortunately, I think Kris is going home this week. But, I said that last week and he was in the Top 3. We’ll see what happens tonight.

Danny’s solo performance didn’t do anything for me. I personally could barely understand his words sometimes. Adam was Adam. No more need be said.

My favorite performance was the duet of Adam and Allison. They rocked the house! I agree with the judges that a duet on their albums would be cool. They were so in sync and having such a good time too.

Last night felt super rock-ish. Why, then, was last year’s Rock ‘n’ Roll week so different? There were ballads in last year’s rock week, and certainly it was nothing like what we experienced last night. Either I have a selective memory or something changed this year. Maybe it’s just because of the new contestants this year. Any thoughts?

  55. Oh, and I also want to say one more thing. This might not annoy the other contestants since they are such friends, but it annoys me. What annoys me is that the judges use Adam’s name so openly when critiquing the others. Last year, I thought it was always “the other contestant”. without name-dropping like ths. The judges can’t help but compare performances, but I feel name-dropping is not needed.

Again, they are all friends so it might not bother them as much. Any thoughts on this?

Rama wrote: “I was trying to stop myself from asking, but I can’t: Galen, how on earth is Whole Lotta Love not a “truly recognizable rock song”?!?!?!? It is one of THE greatest rock classics. Rama, I can kind of understand what you are saying, but with all due respect, I just am not a fan of that song. It does nothing for me personally. I don’t really care all that much about its “place in rock history.” I am happy for it if it has a very well-respected spot in rock history, but that doesn’t influence my opinion of it. I’ll take “Dream On” over that ANY day. As for your assumption about me, you are quite wrong. I am not going to give out my age, but I can assure you I am not a pre-teen! Thank you for that last bit. It made me laugh!

Now, onto Anita’s very inconsiderate comment regarding Danny: “Danny, Danny, Danny … this song was just NOT good, in any way. First, (IMHO) you pulled the Lost My Wife Card again with the lyrics to Dream On, “… everybody has their dues in life to pay … maybe tomorrow the good Lord will take you away …”. Oh, hear we go again. Danny’s pimping his dead wife to win. Give . . . me . . . a . . . break. This is frontrunner backlash in its purest form. I can’t believe you actually picked out ONE verse out of “Dream On” and harped on that. I would respect Danny less if he DID NOT bring the emotion he feels from his beloved wife’s passing into his performances. That is, what I believe, helps him connect with the song so amazingly. Nobody got mad at David Cook last year when he sang “Innocent” with lyrics that relate to cancer in a lot of ways. No doubt he had his brother in mind. Also, there was the orange wristband he wore for that dear girl who was struggling with cancer. I ADMIRED Cook for bringing that level of emotion into his performances, and I admire Danny for it as well! Oh, and about the glasses . . . I think they ROCK! My little bro even wishes that he had a pair of glasses so he could get some like Danny! LOL

Listen wrote: “I thought Danny’s last screech was horrific and the sad thing is he had no idea just how bad it sounded.”

Listen, the word “Horrific” is an OPINION. If that is yours, I respect it. That said, I disagree. It was not vocally perfect at all, but I thought that it was kind of COOL sounding. Which one of us is right? Neither. They’re just two different opinions. I also do find it very interesting how people are ALL OVER Danny about that bad end note, yet when Adam had a bad end note a few weeks back, THAT was hardly mentioned.

Listen also wrote: “And then Danny-boy had the audacity to fight with the judges about it.”

“Fight” is far too strong a word here, Listen. Danny didn’t FIGHT with the judges. He merely voiced his honest opinion of his performance. You threw the word ‘smug’ around a lot in your post in regards to Danny. Maybe Danny did come off a bit smug, and maybe he didn’t. I wasn’t really paying that much attention. However, if you look for it, you can find times when most of this year’s contestants were “smug”. Anoop spoke back to the judges quite a bit. Megan was also very disrespectful at times. Just this week Allison was very argumentative. Oh, and Adam is not above smugness as well. Last week, I cannot believe that he actually CHOSE a group! That never happens! He would’ve done well to take a page out of Archuleta’s book and just sat down.

Well, I suppose that’s quite enough for now. We will see what happens tonight. NO ONE is safe. ANYONE could go home. ALL are in danger. I just pray that God’s will is in done in who goes home regardless of what I or anyone else wants.

  63. I love rock music, as I was a teen of the 70s. I was familiar with all of the songs from last night, and they were all favorites of mine from way back when.

Adam’s solo was awesome! I was worried that Adam wouldn’t pick Zeppelin since he always seems to do something unexpected, but I’m so happy he did! I agree with TFLS… I’m glad we have our “Ring of Fire Adam” back!

I thought Allison’s solo was good, but not her best performance. Definitely not the worst of the night though. And I just don’t get Simon’s comments about her personality at all. I think she’s a funny and cute teenager, and she has WAY more confidence than I ever had at that age!

Regarding Kris’ solo, I thought he did MUCH better than the judges gave him credit for. That’s a great song, and I loved the performance, and I hope Kris makes it to the top 3.

Dream On was another one of my favorite songs from my teens, and IMO Danny butchered it. He sounded pitchy to me, and then the last note was embarrassing. I don’t dislike Danny, but of the top 4, he’s my least favorite.

As for the Danny/Kris duet, I’m a huge Styx fan (have seen them 3 times in concert), and Renegade is a favorite. I was disappointed in the performance, and think Danny and Kris just didn’t mesh well for the song. It was pitchy, and just not that good. I don’t think Danny was better than Kris though… I’d say they were about equal.

And finally the Adam/Allison duet… I just LOVED these two together. They both have that rock edge and confidence, and they seemed to play off of each other well. What a treat!

IMO, the top 3 were Adam, Allison, and Kris. Danny should be the one heading home, whether that happens or not.

There are many wonderful singers out there, all very different from each other, and each one has her or his own kind of magic to offer–and really, it’s not possible to say that one style or stylist is “better” than another. It’s something to bear in mind.

While each performer has to take responsibility for their own performances, it was also so apparent that Idol managed to showcase Adam and Allison last night in the best possible way.

THANK YOU, TFLS! Somewhere on this site, I posted almost the exact same thing, that basically all Idol sees when they look at Adam Lambert is one big dollar sign. It’s all too obvious. To put him first and then tell everyone else there is no way you will top that is just ridiculous, and puts way too much additional pressure on kids who are already under pressure we can’t begin to imagine. By the same token, if Adam had gone last, and they made the comment that no one topped or could have topped him that I would have no problem with. But do try to show some class AI. Don’t let your greed for the big bucks cause you to be quite so blatant about who you want to win. At least make an attempt to treat the other Idols, who too are giving it their best, with some dignity and respect, okay? Another thing that bothered me about last night was the “lineup.” K/D had to go right from singing their duet into singing their solos, and A/A got to sit through three numbers and rest before doing their duet. That was wrong. Even though I did write that I wanted them to do the duets first, upon reflection, the fairest way to do it would have been to have them all do their solos, followed by their duets, giving each Idol the most time possible to rest between singing two songs. And Slash, IMO, he was a terrible mentor. How did he really help anyone? What, he told Adam to sing in a lower key? Any one of us could have told Adam that. Other than that, what did he really offer in the way of sound advice to those that really needed it? Not much.

And I’m sort of confused why people are so surprised that AI got clearance for a Led Zeppelin tune. They (or at least Clive Davis) got Taylor Hicks clearance for a Springsteen tune during Season 5, so what’s the big surprise? AI has enough pull to get clearance from almost anyone they want to get it from, and as you saw, Led Zeppelin is no exception. I’m not at all surprised they pulled out all the stops to get clearance for Adam. Or should I say, “The Rock God.”

A/A Slow Ride duet was exceptional, and these two definitely bring out the best the other has to offer, and by that, which I won’t go into, I don’t mean just vocally. It was my favorite song of the night. K/D harmonized very well together, and their solos were okay, but no where near the same caliber as A/A’s duet. As for the solos, I wasn’t a fan of any of them.

Allison did okay and I was glad she picked Janis, but I think she should have done Piece of My Heart or Bobby McGee rather than Cry Baby. And Paula is crazy. I mean really, to tell this girl she should be considered to play Janis when there are so many others out there who would be better suited to do so; like, oh let’s just throw Joss Stone out there for the heck of it. Come on Paula, you should know better than that.

I didn’t think Kris did quite as poorly as the judges thought, but he was not at his best by any means. I’m glad he didn’t do Revolution. I don’t think he would have fared well doing that either. And had he done Imagine, he would have been compared to David A., and that could have backfired miserably for him. Kris, I think, should have done a Steve Perry number, if not him than perhaps Brad Delp. I think he’s much more suited to their style than he is The Beatles.

And Galen, my dear dear Galen—if you have not already surmised, nothing against anyone else, but you’re my favorite on this site, and I would not want to anger or hurt you or any other Danny fan in any way imaginable, but I have to be honest and say, what was a non-rocker person like Danny thinking when he chose to go down Steven Tyler Boulevard? If you’re going to take on a classic like “Dream On” you HAVE to bring it, period. It was a HUGE risk, and I’m sorry, but I just don’t think it worked. When I listened to him singing during his session with Slash, he sounded good, and I actually thought he might be able to pull it off. But, when it actually mattered, well, he just didn’t have what it takes. Now mind you, I do think the judges’ comments to Adam may have played a part in all of this. I have a feeling that once the other kids heard all the lofty praise for him they must have been thinking, “Well, I guess I just have to go for it and consequences be damned,” but my opinion is that in all three cases, it caused them to reach just a little too far, and clearly didn’t help their vocals. Danny may have been the biggest victim of this, since he took on such an epic rock song. Over the past few weeks, I have grown to like Danny’s voice more and more, and would like to see him in the finale. I really wish he would have done a CCR tune, perhaps “Have You Ever Seen the Rain.” He has the perfect voice to sing John Fogerty, and I was so hoping he would do something along these lines. But, all in all, I still think he’s going to be safe. Clearly, as talented as Kris and Allison are, Danny has the best voice of the three them and I hope the voters remember that.

As for Adam, he clearly was the best of the night, and I do think he was good, but given that this is really his wheelhouse more so than the others, and due to each of the others at best mediocre performances, how much that really means, I’m not sure. During the Season 5 tour, although not by any means a Chris Daughtry fan, I had the pleasure of hearing Chris sing “Whole Lotta Live” at the Rochester show. In my opinion, without question, Chris’ vocals and delivery of this particular song far outweigh what I heard from Adam last night. And believe it or not, Chris even pulled this off without having to revert to the Elvis snarl? Hard to imagine, huh? 😉

    Going home? Kris or Allison.

  68. Rereader,

My sentiments exactly! If you think about all of the different singers that you like, you like them all for different reasons. Each artist that I like all have a unique voice to themselves. It’s what makes the music industry world go around. If they all sounded alike we would only need one singer! However, that said alot of today’s artist do sound alot alike. It’s cool when an artist has a distinct voice…as soon as you hear them you say, hey! that’s so and so…I love music and I like to listen to all types from Opera to Rock. (Just say no to Rap). My favorite singer of all time is Louis Armstrong.

I think all four of the kids are great, win, place or show, they all are going to have a great career. Kris! I worry about you the most, being a christian myself, I know that this must be hard on you. I saw a different person last night, I saw frustration! I hope that when all is said and done, you make a beautiful contemporary christian album.

First of all, my prayers go out to Debbie for a speedy recovery – thank heavens she did not suffer any broken bones.

As for the rest of “Rock Night” it feels that we are at that stage in the competition where, as in years’ past, everybody seems locked and loaded in their corners, waiting to defend their favorite, too eager to attack their opponents.

I listened, I enjoyed certain performances enormously, was astonished at others. Will leave it at that. At this stage in the competition, people hear what they want to hear, and will like a certain performer/performance because they connect to that person/vocals for whatever reason. Music is about touching souls. If somebody’s performance last night made something stir inside you, smile, feel good, it’s wonderful.

    Peace to all.

There are many wonderful singers out there, all very different from each other, and each one has her or his own kind of magic to offer–and really, it’s not possible to say that one style or stylist is “better” than another. It’s something to bear in mind.

ReReader – could not agree more. And, by the way, I listened to Jason’s webcast and it was wonderful. I love Sweet Medicine so much, although, the key sounded higher? Is that really a lower key? No matter – it was an exceptional performance -so much heart and soul! MMMMMMmmmmm~

Jason did say he was now singing Sweet Medicine in a different key…I guess I assumed lower because I know it was lower at the Texas A&M concert! It certainly sounded stronger than that late night vblog he introduced it in, so I just made an assumption–I’ll just have to listen to it again, hee hee! It is quite lovely, and obviously deeply personal to him. Can’t wait to see what his CD will be like!

  74. Skid, all I have to say is LOL! I guess I have been drinking . . . water, that is! So I suppose that doesn’t count! I actually was quite serious though about what I said. You do not say mean things about contestants just because you don’t like them. You give intelligent, very true critiques that I thoroughly enjoy reading. I agree with everything you said in your last big post.

I also do not think it is right how the judges are constantly pimping Adam and mentioning his name as they evaluate the other contestants. Certainly, you just know after how Adam was praised at the beginning last night that the others felt like they could not stand a chance. So, why try? When the judges are all obviously going to compare you to a “rock god”, then what is the use of trying?

I also thought it was awful how right after Kris and Danny did their duet, that they were expected to go right into their solos. Of course they sounded worse than Adam and Allison! Adam and Allison performed right at the beginning and right at the end. They had ALL that time in-between to rest and prepare their voice. But Kris and Danny were not given that same courtesy.

Louise, I also want to thank you for your encouraging words as well. You said: “Galen, I’d still like to see Danny win this thing, but I’m afraid that you have more faith than I do.”

I understand how you feel, Louise. I am a bit dispirited today today myself. However, all it takes is a little bit of faith to move a mountain. The Bible says that “Faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen.” I do not know if Danny is meant to win American Idol or not, however, for as long as he is in the competition, I will keep the faith and continue to believe that he will have success in his career. Some nights (like last night) that is hard to do, but in my experience, I have learned that having and keeping faith in something or someone can be very difficult. However, it is always the right thing to do and pays off in the end. I am encouraged personally to know that Danny really walks with God. His favorite quote is “Unshakable FAITH is FAITH that has been shaken.” His faith has certainly been shaken, and yet he has not turned his back on his faith. Therefore, I will follow in his example. Just because he had an off night last night, I will not lose faith in him to win this whole competition!

If I may disagree: If these two can’t sing two songs back to back, then they are in the wrong business! Both being worship leaders; they can sing more than one or two songs in a row. That’s not a very good argument for thinking that they are only trying to help out Adam. If they can’t sing two songs back to back the tour this summer is going to be very hard on them!

    Vonnie,

I know you were speaking to Galen, however, I must reply, as I expressed the same bone of contention. My feeling is if you’re going to ask ONE Idol to sing back to back, then ask ALL the Idols to sing back to back. Make it fair to ALL of them. If they wanted to go this route, then A/A should have sang their duet after their solos, just as K/D had to sing their solos after their duet.

What’s good for one should be good for all.

  78. Vonnie,

I was going to make a similar comment to Galen’s post about singning 2 songs in a row, but you beat me to it and said it better than I probably would have.

I actually liked Danny in the very beginning (auditions and Hollywood). I thought his voice was raw, obviously untrained, and that he had potential. But, I became disappointed fairly soon after that he didn’t show breadth in either his delivery or song interpretation(I mean, who wants to hear the same song, sung the same way on an album? Not me). I grew weary of hearing many, many flat notes and a fair amount of sharp ones, and the erratic breathing truncated his phrasing (not to mention what it did for his pitch issues), and I just couldn’t stay on board. I still think he has potential, but I feel he needs to take some extended time with a good vocal coach. (I feel the same way about Kris, whose timbre I love, and whom I think could be a brilliant performer and arranger. I don’t think a thin voice means a bad voice.). It became very evident, to me at least, that Danny’s lack of training was a serious handicap, and I could hear the vocal strain increasing each week. I can’t imagine what practicing that scream all week has done to his voice in the long-term, but I think it significantly impacted both his performances last night. And, I’m not saying one has to have a great voice to be a great performer. I love the gritty rawness of Cocker and Dylan, and I would never in a million years say their are great vocalists. But, they have a musicality and uniqueness (and stellar songwriting chops) that create a whole package where stellar vocals aren’t warranted. I thought, maybe, we’d get that from Danny, but if I take AI as evidence, I don’t think it’s in the realm of possibility. Even his performance “growth” seems like he’s trying to, unsuccessfuly, emulate Adam. (was I the only one who that Adam was the co-contestant Danny said he studied but didn’t want to divulge the name?). That, to me, shows, Danny doesn’t yet know who he is musically, and that’s something you should know at this stage in the game. And, with that, all I’m left with is an insufficient voice.

Okay, wow. That was longer than I expected. Sorry!

I see your point! It, to me, just doesn’t seem like an argument that has alot of validation, because at some point they all are going to have to sing more than one song back to back. But I totally understand the Fair part of it. Although I am an Adam fan; I don’t like how the show plays with the contestants. I wish that they didn’t compare them, and I really wish that they didn’t use their own agenda to try and further one contestant over another. Like I said early in a post. I think they are all extremely talented, and have alot to look forward to after the show is over.

So good luck to all of us.
Remember to create your account with Ticketmaster prior to Friday and connect to Ticketmaster before the 10am presale time on Friday. 96. I have to say that this talk about the show being unfair is getting rather old. If Adam goes first, then it’s not fair because the judges say that no one can top him. If Adam goes last, then the show is shamelessly pimping him and it’s not fair. If Danny and Kris have to do their duet before their solos, then it’s not fair. If Adam and Allison get to close the show with a duet, having had more time after their solos, then it’s not fair.

I have really had quite enough of hearing this kind of talk. Everyone was at a disadvantage having been unable to do a dress rehearsal! So let’s just keep that in mind. The bottom line is that some here will think that Adam is getting special treatment no matter what happends. Of course, these same people would rather forget that Adam was in the bottom two last week. The fact that he kept it together and was able to come out smoking hot and bring the house down, tells me all I need to know about his composure, grace under pressure and mental toughness.

Just look at what happened to Matt after his first trip to the bottom. He never really recovered. He panicked and decided to go back to being a rock singer and that was a disaster. From that point on, he seemed to try to please the judges, the fans and everyone but himself. He lost himself in the process. I don’t think he was ever able to get the bottom two thing out of his head. That was unfortunate for him. Maybe Adam’s years struggling in this business toughened him up enough so that he could handle the shocking bottom two finish last week.

I was quite emotionally upset last week when Adam was in the bottom two, yet I managed to come on here and maintain my composure. I gave Danny credit for giving his best performance and refrained from any “sore loser” type comments. I have tried to be respectful towards others who may disagree with my comments. But I am not pleased with the reaction of some of those who are huge Danny supporters. My belief is that Danny reached for a song that was way out of his vocal range and style. I am also not buying the excuse that the rock theme put some of them at a disadvantage. There is a wealth of material from which to choose. Danny chose unwisely and paid the price.

Danny had pitch problems from the very beginning and the inclusion of those little do-do-do’s, did not work with the melody of the song at all. I wish Slash would have suggested another song for him. It seemed that Slash had some real doubts about Danny’s ability to pull this off. But in the end, the contestant has to choose the right song. Simple as that.

I am not a huge fan of rock music. I didn’t particularly love Led Zeppelin. As I have said often here, Adam has taken me way out of my comfort zone musically. But when he sings rock, somehow I find myself much more responsive. It’s that voice, that incredible instrument. I am happy that I can embrace music that I was not that receptive to earlier in my life. It’s a gift.

I do think Kris got throw under the bus by the judges. But I do think he should have picked a different song. That Beatles song wasn’t right for his voice. I do love his phrasing and the little ways in which he changes a song and his knowledge of arrangement and musical instrumentation is quite impressive. If he works on his vocal technique it would help him immensely.

I will not comment further on Kris and Danny’s duet. I have some issues with Danny’s behavior on stage and after his performances, but I will refrain from further comment.

Yes, Louise – that’s exactly what he should have done, IMO. That’s what Adam did with Allison. He didn’t over-sing her. Everyone’s mileage varies, of course – but that’s how it played to me. And neither Kris nor Danny ever looked at each other – while with Adam and Allison it was all eye contact. I’m not suggesting nefarious dealings here – just commenting on what I saw and heard. I will agree that both Kris AND Danny looked unhappy from the beginning. Maybe it was missing the dress rehearsal. They commented that finding a song that suited both was difficult. Missing that rehearsal must have added a ton of nerves. You know – I began this season really liking Danny and feeling ambivalent towards Kris. That changed over time. My reaction to Danny rather puzzles me. I like him fine during the performance – then totally forget what he’s sung by the end of the night. Kris on the other hand has really grown on me. I’d like to see him in the final three (with Adam and Allison). I hope all do well post Idol. Overall – it’s the best group I can remember in a long while.

  99. mariah, I subscribe to the comment feed for this site, and my feed reader still has a copy of your post before it was deleted. Here it is:

I think the reason people are so surprised Zeppelin cleared its song is because they are notorious for not allowing their music to be used (especially their big hits), either by flat out refusing or setting the price so impossibly high no one will/can pay for it. Even Cameron Crowe couldn’t get one of their songs for his film Almost Famous (he did get to use some songs, but the one he really wanted, and for the life of me I can’t remember which song it was, he said had such a steep price there was just no way).

After listeing to Danny last night, I do hope people who’ve criticized Adam for screaming/screeching now can hear the difference between singing high notes in full voice and what Danny murdered. And, I hope it gives some appreciation for how technically difficult it is to do what Adam does so effortlessly.

This is why I prefer him so much more than Danny (who could also benefit from vocal training), who IMO hasn’t shown a knowledge of music or an innate musicality. I read a similar interview where Orland mentioned that they are not allowed to do song choice for the contestants. Slash’s overview of Danny’s performance had made me nervous – but surely he could have pointed out that last note?

  105. TFLS said, “You know – I began this season really liking Danny and feeling ambivalent towards Kris. That changed over time. My reaction to Danny rather puzzles me. I like him fine during the performance – then totally forget what he’s sung by the end of the night. Kris on the other hand has really grown on me.”

I agree that Kris has grown on me too. I actually began the season with Danny and Adam as my favorites, believe it or not. I also very much liked Alexis and favored her over Allison. It really took me a few weeks to appreciate Kris and Matt. Unfortunately neither of them were consistently good enough to actually win–at least I don’t believe that Kris will win. And even though I think Adam really has the most talent, I just happen to prefer Danny’s voice and his style of singing–yeah, yeah, yeah, I know most of you don’t agree with me but it’s still my preference. But for a few weeks, Danny just seemed to be sliding along–not really upping his game. Last week he showed a much improved side. Unfortunately last night he went backwards. As much as I like Danny and began voting for him a few weeks ago, I honestly do not see him as someone who could pull in big crowds at a concert. I will be very shocked if he wins Idol. I just get really irked at all of the negative talk about him, i.e., he’s smug, he’s wants us to feel sorry for him, he behaves badly, etc. I just don’t see those things about him and I can’t understand what others mean by them. If you can give me specifics, I’d be glad to listen. Has it ever occurred to anyone that he could be suffering from a low level depression because of his wife’s death and might just be going through the motions on Idol? I have no way of knowing if that could be accurate or not, but it wouldn’t surprise me because it can take a long time to get over the death of a loved one. I just really believe that people have been MUCH too hard on him. You can fairly criticize his singing, but what has he really done to deserve the other criticisms?

  106. He probably did mention something to Danny about it, lakhesis, given that his post-performance interview was all about it. I think Slash was stuck in a bad place here, because he acknowledged that: 1) you can’t do that song without going for the big note or else it’ll feel like a cop-out, but 2) if you don’t nail it, it’ll be a disaster. Beyond that, if he’s not allowed to comment on the song choice itself (which was, IMO, a really poor one), pretty much the only thing Slash COULD tell Danny would be, “Good luck with that one, dude.”

I think Danny pretty much screwed himself with that song choice, because “the note” is just beyond his capabilities (not being able to hit that note is nothing to be ashamed of, but it IS something that should be a big fat red flag with the words “DON’T SING ME” emblazoned on it). Apparently he went for it several times in dress rehearsal for the end-of-show recap clip and was unsuccessful each time, which tells me that he couldn’t do it consistently and was crossing his fingers that his live performance would be the one-in-twenty attempt where he actually did pull it off. Not smart.

  107. Hello, Mindy. While I do disagree with a lot of what you said, I do appreciate how in-depth your post was. You seem like a very intelligent person and you truly have a gift for putting what you are thinking effortlessly down into words. Now, to comment on some of what you said.

You wrote: “I have to say that this talk about the show being unfair is getting rather old. If Adam goes first, then it’s not fair because the judges say that no one can top him. If Adam goes last, then the show is shamelessly pimping him and it’s not fair. If Danny and Kris have to do their duet before their solos, then it’s not fair. If Adam and Allison get to close the show with a duet, having had more time after their solos, then it’s not fair.”

Okay, let me start out by saying that I sort of agree with you on this. Constantly complaining about how fair (or unfair) the competition is does get old after awhile. However, I find it interesting that when Adam has a good week, no one wants to talk about how unfair something may have been to one of his competitors. Yet, if Adam didn’t have so great a week, people would probably be complaining about how he was treated unfairly in some way. Just my observation which may not be true, but I have noticed that trend just a little bit on here. The reality is that all Idol had to do to be relatively fair this week was allow the two duets at the end, rather then placing one in the middle and one at the end. That would’ve so solved everything. Still, I suppose it is time we stop discussing fairness. Moving on.

You also wrote: “Everyone was at a disadvantage having been unable to do a dress rehearsal!”

Good point, Mindy. Thank you for reminding us of that. You are right. Everyone was at a disadvantage last night. I agree 100%!

You also wrote: “I was quite emotionally upset last week when Adam was in the bottom two, yet I managed to come on here and maintain my composure. I gave Danny credit for giving his best performance and refrained from any “sore loser” type comments.”

Hey, how do you think I feel this week? I admit that I am nervous for Danny. I won’t deny that. And I do commend you on keeping your composure last week. However, while you may have refrained from making “sore loser” comments, you are kind of making “sore winner” comments right now. For instance, you spent two paragraphs of your post, basically dissing Danny in every way. I didn’t say bad things about Adam when he had a less than stellar week last week.

You also wrote: “I have some issues with Danny’s behavior on stage and after his performances, but I will refrain from further comment.”

I honestly don’t know what you are talking about, Mindy. However, I know that I CAN honestly say that I have also had some issues with how Adam has carried himself up on that stage (last week in particular), but I will also refrain from further comment.

Last but not least, you wrote: “I am not pleased with the reaction of some of those who are huge Danny supporters.”

Well, then you will probably not like me very much, Mindy, because Danny is the ONLY ONE truly keeping me interested in this season from week to week. I will support him resolutely up until the time he goes home. I expect that Adam fans (and Kris and Allison fans respectively) will do the same for their favorites as well. There’s nothing wrong with that either. You think I don’t get weary of Adam fans hailing him as a “rock god”? That gets old, but I bite my tongue.

Anyway, Mindy, the bottom line is this. I like you. You are a nice person who makes a lot of good posts. However, we disagree right now over who we think the American Idol should be. Obviously, there is some friction. However, that is just in the spirit of the competition. We’re like wild sports fans rooting maniacally for our favorite team. I enjoyed your comments and I also enjoyed responding to them. Thank you.

  110. Wow, I have never seen a MCL’s blog this active in less than a 24 hour time span! I came to see what MCL had to say, as I have the utmost respect in her critiques. I truly am not here to hate on any contestant, so when I say something negative, it is not about them as a person. Adam clearly was in his element last night. He is the only AI contestant (male at least) that could take that song on and do it great justice. Allison was good in her solo, but I agree about the song choice. Not enough melody for her abilities. Kris’ solo I thought was better than the judges thought. Sure, a bit safe, but he sang it well! Danny, I am sorry to say, was easily the worst vocal performer last night. It started out slightly pitchy, improved a bit in the middle, but by the time he was winding up for the big scream, it was clear there was no way in he!! he could hit that note. That’s not a dig on him. He just doesn’t have the range for it, simple as that. It was one of the worst attempts at a belt I have ever heard on Idol. Listen to it as an audio. It really was that bad. Last week he was great. This week, a train wreck. I will not comment on the duets, as they really shouldn’t be part of the vote.

You can tell that Adam worked hard and studied AI before he… began… to… audition. The two dudes couldn’t even pick out good songs out of the whole array of rock songs? Didn’t they practice before they even audition? if not, wait until next year!!! Allison too. She is only 17 years old, why didn’t she wait until she was older and picked…out…the….right….songs!!! AND PRACTICE!! disco, rock, birth years, and the ones that are consistent year after year and learn public speaking? It is the only chance they get to be on AI and become stars!! They are totally arrogant.

Vonnie, I adored the uniqueness and charm of Jason Castro. I even became a Dreadhead, and all my Grandbabes knew who he was soon after the TOP 24. I miss Season 7 so much.

So, considering he will never get a chance to shine where he would shine the brightest, I am proud of him tonight.

Galen, in the past Top 3 included Clive’s Choice, Idols’ Choice, and Judges’ Choice. Danny WILL have the opportunity to sing a song he loves. I am sure you’ll love hos perfromance! 😉

TFLS, I am glad that you mentioned, “Adam and Allison sang TOGETHER. That’s what made it such a treat.” And, “Duets are give and take – not vocal competition (that’s for the solos)”. Very true summary!

J, contestants have done “Open Arms” and some group performances of Journey’s songs. To be honest, if Danny had chosen one of Journey’s fast tempo songs, he would have done a decent job or better. I like the suggestion of Bob Dylan for either Kris or Danny

I am also really praying for Debbie the Stage Manager.

This is such a lively group!

I know that things can get overheated, but I truly do not want there to be any unkindness here. I respect your opinions and also think that your posts are intelligent, knowledgeable and well written. Yes, we seem to be on very different sides here. So be it.

I would have been totally okay with the duets coming after all of the solo performances. I think that would have worked better.

I did listen to the performances again today. I listened first with my eyes closed, so that I could focus better on the vocals. Then I watched the performances again, solos and duets. I actually think that Kris and Danny’s duet was not as bad as I originally thought. Danny’s more powerful voice would naturally take over in some parts, and Kris continues to struggle with his vocals. Hopefully, MCL will comment more on this in her critique. But there was some really good harmony in their duet. I still think it suffered from being a little out of sync at times, but I think a dress rehearsal might have really helped in that regard.

I did listen to Danny again and it sounded even worse when I closed my eyes and just focused on the vocals. It wasn’t just the last note, it was the build up of Dream on, dream on, dream on, until that final last ghastly note. I have to call it as I heard it. It was really totally the wrong song for him. The middle of the song was where I thought Danny had a good run. That part I found very good. But overall, it just did not work. I won’t belabor the point, since it has already been mentioned that I previously devoted two paragraphs to Danny’s vocals.

Since you don’t know to what I was referring regarding Danny’s behavior, I will tell you. I dislike the way he applauds for himself and says thank you to the audience. It’s gratuitous and self-indulgent. I think he really oversang in parts of his duet with Kris. I can’t say that it was grandstanding or intentional. Danny has a powerful voice, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. I also thought that it wasn’t a particularly smart idea to talk back to the judges after botching the last notes of that song. They happened to be quite supportive in their comments. Only Simon mentioned the last note at all.

Having said all this, I do think Danny will be safe tonight. I also take issue with any type of comment that might indicate that I am kind of lording Danny’s performance over his supporters. I could have refrained from saying anything last week and just focused on my concern for Adam. But I gave Danny the credit he deserved.

I am happy that Adam was able to come back strong after last week. He has managed to stay true to himself as an artist throughout this competition. I like the fact that he came out in force and didn’t back away from who he is. I am not taking anything for granted at this point, but no matter what happens tonight, I will be okay with it.

Mindy, I’m glad you listened to the Kris/Danny duet again. I thought that people were being much too critical of it.

And in reference to Mindy’s comments about being disappointed in the comments from Danny’s supporters about fairness, I have to mention that I may be critical of Idol’s manipulations as it gets closer to the finale, but I don’t ever remember criticizing the other contestants’ actions this year–their performances maybe, but not their actions. As a matter of fact, I think they’ve all been a great bunch of contestants. My criticism of Idol is something that I do every year around this time, because it bothers me when they so obviously favor one contestant and try to manipulate the audience. If I had my way, the judges would give really constructive criticism to each contestant, but refrain from being so partial to one. Yes, each contestant must own their performance each week, but there is also a lot that goes on that is totally out of their control.

  120. Thank you, Mindy, for that excellent post. Look, I agree with you that it wasn’t Danny’s strongest performance (in fact, it was probably his worst so far this season). Did I personally feel the overall performance was AS BAD as you thought it was. Honestly, no. In fact, I really look forward to hearing how the studio version sounds. I am positive it will sound MUCH better! But, hey, thank you for listening to his performance a second time with a more open mind. You still have your initial opinion, as I do mine, but I am glad we are able to discuss our different opinions without things getting heated.

As for Danny’s “behavior”, I guess we all get different impressions of contestants up on that stage. I watched how Danny behaved when he was being critiqued by the judges again, and I didn’t really get the same vibes you did. I also like how tonight Danny was able to explain what he meant on Tuesday about not knowing whether he hit that note or not. Most contestants probably do not really know how great they sounded until after the show when they can watch it back with a little bit of aesthetic distance between them and their performance. Also, you will note tonight that Danny didn’t deny that his last note sounded bad. In fact, I appreciated how he was able to laugh it off. To be honest, watching it back allowed me to just enjoy it and laugh as well. Definitely one of the more memorable moments of the season for me! LOL

Anyway, Mindy, no hard feelings at all. I love having these kind of discussions. It’s not necessarily about converting someone else to see things your way, but just having a nice discussion where you can respectively argue different views is great!

Gah, the post I just submitted needs major proofreading. Basically, I was trying to say that Danny’s rehearsal with Slash was actually pretty good and MUCH better than the actual performance. It was still rough around the edges, but the last note was much more free and musical. So, Danny has it in him! I give him props for attempting the note. (Although my vocal mentors would say that it isn’t wise for a singer to include any notes in a song that he or she doesn’t nail every single time<, which is a good point, but Danny tried. He really did. One can’t fault him for that.)

  124. I also have missed Jason Castro’s delicate style. He was the first singer on Idol I ever really responded to. I thrilled he’s finally in the studio recording. I would think he’s more of a live artist, however. It’s hard to capture the entirety of his performances through sound alone. I was mesmerized by everything – not just his voice. Jason seemed to embody his music. It was very reminiscent of Kenny Loggins or Dan Fogelberg. Should Adam win this year – I hope it opens the door to more iconic or unusual artists – singers outside of the mainstream, like Jason. Music is so international in scope – almost any style is going to attract a huge following (and make money – which is all Idol’s about after all). That’s why we should embrace our individual choices and be happy for them. Each and every one will have a career out of this (some later, as with Jason – but it’s there if they pursue it). We can argue over who we prefer – but in the end, we’re all correct in our assessment. Danny IS a great entertainer. Thousands will flock to see him perform live. As will Allison’s adherents (I was so sad to see her go tonight!) – and Kris, and Matt and on ad infinitum. I want Michael Sarver to never have to go back to being a roughneck. Anoop will be a superstar, I think – as will little Alexis (don’t you miss her?). The pie is big enough for all to have their own hefty slice – and I think that’s just fabulous!

Thanks again for your kind words and understanding. We just love who we love and are passionate about it. That’s a good thing! I like everyone here and look forward to reading everyone’s comments. I learn a lot.

I have to give Danny credit for handling the whole bad note thing with humor and class and grace. It’s not easy to laugh at yourself, but he managed to do it. I take my hat off to him for that. He even joked that some of his relatives put him on mute. It was the best way to address a somewhat awkward issue.

Now it’s time to move on and look forward to next week and our all male final three. I was sad to see Allison go, even though I have been kind of hard on her singing, like J. It’s just out of concern for her and her precious instrument. She has talent, but needs to learn vocal technique, mature a little and develop as an artist. This was actually the right time for her to go. She won’t be destroyed by this pressure cooker and can focus on where her career goes from here. I think she has a bright future.

I would also like to say that I join in the whole idea of a group hug! We are all friends here. I have made a promise to keep an open mind and approach next week with excitement and eagerness.

It looks like I’m the new kid on the block here in your comparison to you being a six-year poster. I don’t expect that everyone is going to like what I say since I made a decision to support someone other than Adam. I called you on your comment because it had nothing to do with Danny’s singing. If I had made a negative comment about something like Adam’s supposed lifestyle, I can only imagine how many people would have come down hard on me. I started posting here fairly close to the beginning of the season and I gradually came around to supporting Danny. I post my thoughts because I don’t necessarily think this forum is just an Adam Lambert forum. In season 5 I was a regular visitor and poster to the Gray Charles site for Taylor. EVERYONE there supported Taylor. You get a skewed vision of what others are thinking when you post at a site where your favorite is everyone else’s favorite. I try to make my comments about Danny without bashing any of the other contestants–because truthfully I like the others too. But if my comments are offensive, so be it. I’ll just continue to read Masterclasslady’s excellent critiques and wish you all well.

In a perfect world, this competetion would be all about the “voice” and not the back story. I don’t think any of the guys personal life should be brought up. Last year I so much appreciated the fact that David C. did not talk about his brother Adam. They both wanted it to be about the “Voice”.

I am new here this year as well, and I do find the posters on this site much more easy going than some of the other sites. Hope you reconsider and keep posting. How about we start a truce! No more personal comments against individual readers. People like who they like and, instead of the negative comments against readers or singers, be positive.

  134. Kariann1 – You hit the nail on the head with the “different personalities” comment. I feel that a lot misunderstandings come out of personality clashes. Some people are simply blunt; others try their best to “cushion the blow” of their posts. Some people are easily offended; others never take anything personally. Some people are more objective, unbiased; other people are more emotional, skewed in their interpretations.

A diversity of personalities is always likely to lead to conflict. I think a way to assuage the conflict is simply for people to remember to “pick and choose their battles.” Is a certain post really worth a reply? Can your (general “you”) reaction to the post be explained by a difference in personality? Maybe, pause a little before you hit the “Submit Comment” button.

I think it really boils down to not taking anything personally and understanding the weakness of your own personality. If you know that you’re more emotional (yes, own up to it! =P), think a little before replying to another person’s post, and consider that the person may be coming from a more rational place than you. Or vice versa!

An example: In my humble opinion, objective truths, such as “So-and-so had pitch issues,” are not worth an argument. Some people read into subtext that isn’t there. Everyone has had pitch issues some time or another! Simply calling out pitch issues is not meant to be degrading; it is simply stating a fact. Some personalities need statements like this to be highly sugarcoated to swallow, though, while others want it straight. The fact of life is that not everyone will always phrase things the way you wished they’d be phrased, but just remember that this person is just being true to him or herself, flaws and all.

Think about it before you reply, lol!

Let’s not put rules in place about who should or shouldn’t write what based on who we, as individuals, like the best on Idol, or on how we personally feel someone should conduct themselves. In reality, although many of you may not agree, it’s quite, in fact, it’s DOWNRIGHT tame here compared to posts I’ve read on other sites about Idol itself and the Idol contestants. If you disagree, feel free to check around and find out for yourself, and then you’ll come back here and say this site is a walk in the park compared to most of the other sites people post on. Isn’t that part of the reason why you come here to begin with?

As I’ve written before, it’s so easy to misinterpret what people are saying on websites, because you can’t see the person, nor can you hear the tone or inflection in their voice when you are “reading a post” as opposed to listening to someone speak. It would be nice if we were all journalists and could write our posts in a way that didn’t offend anyone, but that is not going to happen, and people have to learn to not take each and every word from a post so literally; and instead look at the post in its entirety to figure out what that person is really trying to say. Why not just accept that and take each thing for what it is, which is merely one person’s thoughts and opinions and NOT gospel. For goodness sakes, are we adults here, or a bunch of children with feet of clay that are going to take “our” baseball home just because we don’t like the way the game is going? If you don’t like what someone posts, reply to it, or turn the other cheek, or do whatever it is you normally do. But to want and try to “control” what someone posts here, or try to control the overall “tone” or “direction” of the site just because you may not like what someone has to say, or want to stifle what you don’t want discussed, well that’s just nonsense and in my opinion, rather childish.

This is not at all uncommon when people become emotionally involved, and are emotionally invested. People start to take things personally, and once you start doing that, things become much bigger than they really are. So what if someone says something bad about Danny, or Adam, or whomever….all that amounts to is that it happens to be what that person is feeling at that particular time, nothing more. And, is it possible, once you set your emotions aside and allow yourself to become objective, that there actually might be some validity in what someone is trying to say? EVERYONE here has a right to express themselves, and to do that in the way they best know how, and who is anyone who is so righteous that it entitles them to say how that should or shouldn’t be done?

Louise, you go right on expressing yourself as you wish, and don’t let yourself fall victim to allowing anyone, be they a six year or six day veteran of this site, to stop you from doing so just because they may not like what you have to say or how you say it.

  137. MCL – I love your two posts!

How about we start a truce! No more personal comments against individual readers. People like who they like and, instead of the negative comments against readers or singers, be positive.

Attempt to point out – in a calm, collected manner –your reasons why your favorite excels in your mind and heart. And then – move on after a while of chit chat to another topic.

Amazing advice! I could not have said it better. I really like what you said: that if someone is going to reply to an individual comment, it should not be against the comment. Basically, respond to the comments with which you (general “you”) agree and for the ones you disagree, agree to disagree in your mind. Don’t feel the need to counter-attack, but as MCL said, write back with positivity. e.g. “I acknowledge so-and-so’s weaknesses, but here are his/her strengths in my eyes.”

    Also:

Also, feel free to gently critique the singers, but the key word here is “gently”. Remember, they are human beings with feelings and family and friends.

This is true! As someone who studies vocal technique, the physiology behind it, etc., I sometimes have the tendency to notice every little flaw—not because I set out to but because I hear everything and cannot ignore what I hear—but as a singer myself who is increasingly performing in a live setting, I realize how hard it is and that everything does not have to perfect every single time. In the end, I really admire singers with the right heart motivations, and I hope that the competition doesn’t lead people to lose themselves and forget what’s truly important.

  138. skid – SO many good points in your post. Let me highlight a few.

    * “it’s DOWNRIGHT tame here… Isn’t that part of the reason why you come here to begin with?”
    * the whole second paragraph is awesome! From the “it’s so easy to misinterpret…” to “It would be nice if we were all journalists” to “people have to learn to not take each and every word from a post so literally; and instead look at the post in its entirety to figure out what that person is really trying to say…” to the “merely one person’s thoughts and opinions and NOT gospel.” Umm, yeah, everything! lol.

143. I’ve never posted here before, but have been reading all of the comments all season, and I so appreciate all of the great discussion. I almost didn’t post due to the recent onslaught of misunderstanding, but you know, I think we’ll all get around to remembering this is just discussion,… Please forgive me if this has actually been addressed, I tried to skim all the previous posts.
Since Tuesday night, I’ve been terribly bugged about one single word sung on Tuesday night (which led me to getting all philosophical about all of the artists’ performances)… perhaps this isn’t the thread to mention it in, but, I know if I try to get feedback on the AI board, I’d just get pounded for the perceived bashing of a contestant… so, here goes… in the song “Dream On”, there are two phrases that end in singing the word “true”… and it came out of the contestant as “treeeewwww”… it absolutely FLOORED me! Perhaps it is a regional thing… dialect is different in the northeast versus the south etc. It sounded SO forced and, well, icky… like he didn’t like the word and wanted to get it out of his mouth so quickly because it tasted badly. The contestant who sang this song doesn’t have the type of voice I like to hear, but I do my VERY BEST to listen with an open mind. For me, the overall diction with which this contestant sings just isn’t quite there yet (this is my opinion, and I’m here to better understand my dilemma, and to fill in my knowledge base of vocal music appreciation, not to bash)… he just doesn’t seem to be very clear, but that also could do with the raspiness/airiness of his voice. I sometimes feel he gets drowned out by other musical instruments playing more clear tones.
Now, in saying all of this, in my opinion the contestant DOES maintain pitch consistently, and his studio versions of songs are quite good. Perhaps it’s all just a nerves thing when he performs live?

Be kind… I’m new at this… but I do value your opinions… and I know that one word shouldn’t make or break a performance, but, it is just sticking with me (won’t touch the final note, we all know that was just an…oopsie…)

  145. Crayola – Singers usually sing on pure vowels, which is considered more aesthetically pleasing and also tends to make regional dialects less of a factor. (True story: My friend made this comment to me, “I just realized that Leona Lewis is British.” My reaction: “Did you never hear her speak?” My friend: “Well, I only heard her sing!”)

I can understand how someone not singing on pure vowels would sound odd. Subconsciously, I think we’ve internalized the vowels we’re used to hearing, the ones that most singers use (even if we don’t think of it that way), and that’s why when someone deviates from the standard vowel usage, it sounds “off” to us.

The pure vowel for “true,” by the way, is OO.

    Like

  146. J – Good point. To my ears, when Danny sings “oo” it does not sound like the pure vowel would sound with a rounded mouth. It sounds like “eewww” with a wider, more horizontal mouth. I can really hear the dipthong.

That said, the WI accent is one where vowels are over-emphasized and hardended (e.g., “tag” is pronouced “tayg”). And dipthongs are strong. If you haven’t had proper vocal training, which Danny says he hasn’t and I would agree with, trying to soften the vowels would be pretty hard, because they don’t feel right/natural coming out of your mouth if you’re used to hardening them. I’ve read criticisms of Danny’s accent in his speaking voice on other sites. . .basically people say it’s unpleasing to the ears. His accent is actually pretty weak comparatively, for those who live in WI. (I lived in WI for a decade). Even though it’s relatively subtle, I can easily pick it out when he sings. This is just one of the many reasons I think Danny will show marked improvement from vocal training.

    Like

  147. Crayola . . . I didn’t notice the problem with “true” in “Dream On,” however, I can relate to what you are talking about because the previous week Danny sang the word “river” and each time I listened to the performance, which I loved, by the way, it sounded like “reever.” Even though I really like Danny, it made me cringe each time I heard it. I assumed it was just a regional accent.

And MCL . . . you are one classy lady! Thanks for stepping in to get things back on an even keel here.

Season 1 – definitely Kelly Clarkson
Season 2 – without a doubt, Clay Aiken
Season 3 – beautiful voice, Diana DeGarmo
Season 4 – I adored and loved his voice Anthony Fedorov, but liked Carrie and Bo so much. Carrie Underwood was the right choice.
Season 5 – most entertaining and favorite, Taylor Hicks
Season 6 – I voted for Phil Stacey; but felt that Melinda Doolittle had the best voice.
Season 7 – simply wonderful, Jason Castro; however, I was one of the few that was rooting for both David Cook and David Archuleta
Season 8 – loved his ballads, Anoop Desai; most talented Adam Lampert

Vonnie, thank you for the question! This Grammie was head over heels in love with Anthony and Jason. My young grandchildren knew who they were by looks and voice. My oldest grandson wanted me to play Bo Bice and Blake Lewis (on VHS tape and specially made CD) over and over again. Now, at age 8 he prefers Adam over Anoop.

All commercials and crying was eliminated from the tapes. These are my personal choices. I guess you could say I am addicted to American Idol. 😀

Season 5 – most definitely Taylor (liked Elliott too)
    Season 6 – Melinda Doolittle & LaKeisha
Season 7 – only watched it sporadically because I was too busy watching political shows about the U.S. election (thought both Davids were good–didn’t have a preference); loved Jason Castro’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”! Also really liked Michael Johns.
Season 8 – Danny (although I think both Adam and Kris are good too)

Now my question is: which season was your favorite?

    Like

  154. The first season was my favorite! =) I loved that it was more raw and real; American Idol felt less like a machine back then There were fewer product placements, the whole set-up wasn’t overly glitzy, Paula’s critiques were coherent, the shows had less filler, and the Ford commercials were skits and not corny music videos. Plus, I love the intimacy of “California Dreamin'” with the bunch of them huddled over a fire—that felt real! The scenes from the Idol mansion were cute as well, and I felt that back then, guest mentors and performers weren’t overemphasized at the expense of the contestants. Not to mention that I loved the contestants’ tendency to dress according to the theme! If I remember correctly, Kelly Clarkson said that they had to buy their own clothes back then!

And of course, Kelly Clarkson is my favorite contestant ever, but all in all, I loved season one for so many reasons. I was truly invested in the outcome of that season. (I don’t know why, but I was super nervous during the finale!)

    Season 1: Kelly Clarkson
Season 2: Ruben Studdard (hope I spelled his last name right)
    Season 3: Diana DeGarmo
    Season 4: Carrie Underwood
Season 5: Mandisa or Daughtry (toss-up)
    Season 6: Jordin Sparks
    Season 7: David Archuleta
    Season 8: Danny Gokey

  176. Vonnie, I answered your question within my previous post. I told you who my favorite was each season AND who I thought should win!

I hope more of our fellow particpants can come back here to answer these fun-type questions.

I went to one AI Concert and that was last year, Season 7. It was more fun than I imagined! It is difficult to name just one season, so I will say Seasons 4 & 5. Season 7 was also excellent.

Previously, I felt Season 3 was the weakest, but I really think Season 8 is the absolute worse. It has nothing to do with the contestants. TPTB have made a major mess of the show starting with the TOP 36, “Judge Save” rule, less performances, major manipulations, etc. I leave it at this.

I have to admit that Adam Lampert has manage to captivate me – he is so talented. However, I would pay to see Anoop in concert, as well as Anthony, and Jason. All three would be perfect in a venue like Meadow Brook (Oakland University) in Michigan. Clay Aiken appeared there several times – wonderful!

Louise wrote: Skid, I think I love you!!!

Don’t let that worry you. No one here is so perfect that they always express their opinion in the most logical or rationale fashion. Emotions do play a part in all of this, and that’s not a bad thing. Being passionate is just as important as being objective. To me, it’s finding a way to balance the two so that your posts come across as neither overly analytical or overly emotional. However, often times, that’s easier said than done.

I too like Bo’s “In A Dream” and “Whipping Post.” And I forgot to give kudos to Kat McPhee for her stunning performance of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” I love Judy Garland, and I normally cringe when I hear others sing her “signature” song. But Kat, God Bless her heart, really did Judy justice when she did that song.

Why is Taylor my favorite? Let me think about how I would best like to express that and get back to you!

  183. What do I like best about Taylor? Now that is a tough one. He has so many fabulous attributes, as both a person and an artist; that it seems no matter what or how much I write, I’ll still forget something

First of all, I LOVE his sense of humor! The guy loves to have fun and he loves to laugh. And I love the fact that if he finds something to be funny, he just laughs! He doesn’t try to hide it, he isn’t embarrassed by it, he just enjoys it, and that is so refreshing! And he doesn’t mind it one bit if the joke is on him. He laughs at himself just as easily as he does at anyone else, and that is not an easy thing for most of us to do.

I was also quite taken with the self control he displayed in the face of being dehumanized by Simon Cowell; to a much higher degree, I might add, than any other “top twelve” contestant before or since. I had the opportunity to meet Taylor at a meet and greet in NYC after one of his performances in Grease, and I must tell you, he was a gentleman in every sense of the word, and he was very genuine and very sincere. The man could not say enough good things about his fans, and you can tell by the look on his face when he speaks about them that he holds them in high regard and is very appreciative of their support.

As for why I like him as an artist, I don’t think there’s anyone who said it more simply, truthfully, and beautifully than Stevie Wonder himself, who said, and I quote verbatim, “Taylor has feeling, and I’m believing that that feeling is coming from his soul.”

I don’t care what any Idol judge, any music industry mogul, any mentor, or any fan says or has said about any one of the Idol contestants from Season 1 to Season 9, the compliment that Stevie Wonder gave Taylor is the highest form of compliment any one of them ever has, or ever will, receive.

And I loved that he made me feel good when he was performing. I remember the first time he performed on Idol, I couldn’t stop smiling.

It’s the genuine personality that comes out of them, (I was just thinking Bob Marley) HA! Jason too, would stand and smile at Simon and even Paula as she made a mess out of them singing two songs. Sometimes when I’m watching Adams face while they are critiquing or in his case praising him, I get the impression that he wants more from them, not so much praise, but (what am I trying to say here), substance. Not; that he dares to walk in the path of greatness! Does this make any sense? See I can’t make a post sound logical! It’s like he’s waiting on them to say something that will make sense and will help him.

  186. Skid and Louise, it is very obvious you both adored Taylor Hicks. I have mentione that he was a great entertainer and my favorite from season 5. Do your answers indicate you never voted for any other? Ot even that you didn’t like anyone from any other season? Thanks!

Actually I voted in the Season 2 final for Clay. And in Season 4 final I voted for Bo. And in Season 5, I voted every week as much as possible for Taylor, but I also voted occasionally for Elliott. And then this season, I’ve voted a couple of weeks for Danny. But my heart is definitely not in it like it was for Taylor. I still have my TIVO set to record any show that Taylor appears in. And a funny coincidence was the fact that my nephew resembles Taylor. During Season 5 when Taylor was so popular, my nephew couldn’t go out of his apartment without a baseball cap. Even after Idol was over, he learned to recognize “the look” of people who would do a double-take whenever they saw him. And people would often come up to him and ask if he was Taylor Hicks. I might add, that he didn’t appreciate it because he didn’t like Taylor at all. But he was a bit of a Idol snob–I know quite a few people who would never admit to watching Idol and “Idol snob” is what I call them.

I think I remember Skid posting on the Gray Charles web site. Am I right, Skid? I posted there too sometimes but I used a different name then.

  188. Quick comment: My favorite Taylor Hicks ‘moment’ was when he laid on the floor and Ryan joined him and asked a question. I was laughing so hard. 😀

I cannot name one Idol that could pull that off!

I have voted for others, but only two. I voted for Bo Bice, and I voted for David Archuletta, but with nowhere near the fervor that I did for Taylor. And as I said before, I don’t believe Taylor has ever gotten the credit he deserves for how much he did for the show itself. I’ll post more about that later.

    Louise,

If I posted on the Gray Charles site, it had to have been only once or twice. Not to get you upset, but just because I want to be honest with you; the truth is, I didn’t much care for what I felt was the “condescending” manner that the gentleman who ran the site treated the members, so I stayed away. Which n the end is just as well, because I would not have been silent about how I felt, and it would have only been a matter of time before he booted me off anyway. 🙂

I was a MASSIVE poster on the Original Taylor Hicks Fansite, and that is where I was “dubbed” by the other members as the “master of the one liner.” I had a BALL on that site. Once that site took on a new format, many of us were not “comfortable” with it, and one of the members began her own site, known as srqsoulpatrol. I have posted a few times on Headquarters too, but not recently. So, it may be those other sites you know me from more so than Gray Charles.

Maybe someone can answer a question for me??? Sometimes I see where someone is quoting someone, and the quote appears in a gray box? How it is that one does that? Makes the box appear around what they are quoting, that is?

  190. Skid–no reason for me to be upset–I just thought I remembered your unusual “name” there. I know exactly what you’re talking about–the guy who ran the site did occasionally get angry at the posters. I think he even shut it down for a while.

As much as I loved Taylor, there were a couple of his performances that I wasn’t crazy about and that was “Country Roads” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” Any comment about that?

  191. Hi, skid. To have someone’s quote appear in a gray box, you use the blockquote tags in HTML.

    This code:
    <blockquote>Quoted text</blockquote>

    will appear as:

If this doesn’t work, J, what am I doing wrong?

On second thought, maybe you shouldn’t answer that! 🙂

  193. It did and didn’t work. I got the box, but the text didn’t appear in it. I put the code at both the beginning and the end of the text. I’m taking it that the code just needs to be placed before or after the text itself, is that correct?

    I’ll try again.

  195. I just realized that I made a mistake in a previous post when I mentioned that even though I loved Taylor, I wasn’t crazy about two of his performances. One was “Country Road” and the other was “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” I meant to say that I wasn’t crazy about “Country Road” and “Not Fade Away.” The thing that I didn’t like about “Not Fade Away” was that he came across that night as being a little bit dorky–I think it was more the dance routine than the singing that I didn’t love.

  196. Louise:

I wasn’t a fan of all Taylor’s performances either, and as I wrote in an earlier post, when I would mention that on “his” site, many of his fans really came down hard on me for saying so. Honestly though, I don’t care who might say so, no one that performs on Idol has STELLAR performances each and every week throughout the competition. NO ONE. Even those that do this for a living and have done so for years aren’t perfect EACH AND EVERY time out, and neither is any contestant on this show.

This is what sometimes bothers me about fans of the show. Many of them simply cannot be objective, or else they simply refuse to be objective. Just as in life, many people hear only what they want and see only what they want, and have little room for digesting anything else; including others opinions. But again, I attribute that to the emotional investment one makes in the “Idol of their preference” more so than I do anything else. Most of the time, I don’t think people even realize they are acting this way, because I do think that at their core, most people really do want to be fair, and do in fact think they ARE being fair. But that in itself doesn’t make it so. 😉

So, if I wanted to quote your “Testing, testing……

    the code would be:
    <blockquote>Testing, testing……

If this doesn’t work, J, what am I doing wrong?</blockquote>

    and that will appear as:

    Hope that helps! =)

  198. Skid…Got a question for ya!

I read an article recently, (I think it was over at Mj’s site, not sure) Taylor was talking about his new album and he called the songs more Country/Rock.

Question: Do you think Taylor will put his songs out on the country stations and try that venue? Also, do you think he would find more success in the country genre?

I think Taylor would do very well on the Country stations. I’m not much of a country music kind of person, but if Taylor was on the radio…I’d listen!

If I remember what I’ve read correctly, I think that some of the songs off of Taylor’s CD have been played on Country Stations with a fair amount of success.

Taylor’s kind of tough to categorize because he really does like all kinds of music; Motown, Soul, R&B, Classic Rock, Blues, etc. But after all, he is a born and bred Alabama boy, so I’m not surprised that there’s Country infused in him as well.

Taylor always sort of struck me as a Southern Rock kind of guy, so yes, I think he could do well in the Country Genre’ and would probably be more easily accepted there than in any other vein. I think Country Music has proven themselves to be “more accepting” of outsiders; case in point, Sebastian Bach winning Gone Country, or the “Crossroads” series they do on the Country TV station. Hank Williams and Kid Rock. Joss Stone and LeAnn Rimes. James Taylor and The Dixie Chicks. Heart and Wynonna. Who would have ever expected to see these artists singing together? But you know, country artists stars really seem to welcome anyone that they feel genuinely LOVES MUSIC, not what the music can do for them, but the music itself, and I think Taylor clearly fits that mold.

That’s just my take on it.

I just went back and listened again to “Seven Mile Breakdown” it really has a country vibe to it. I say “Go for it Taylor” wouldn’t it be awesome if he turned out to be as big as Carrie! Wouldn’t Simon have a cow? HA!
