Vocal Masterclass Discussion Thread For American Idol Season 7 Top 8 Gals

American Idol Season Seven Top 8 FemalesOverall, I thought the Top 8 ladies were a little flat this week - literally and figuratively. The voices sounded really constricted and there was far too much chest voice applied to their upper register singing.

Syesha was far and away the best vocalist of the week and  her radiant star power is undeniable.

Closely behind her was Ramiele, although she appeared very timid and stiff throughout her performance. Her vocals were splendid, however, and I applaud her for using her technical gifts so consistently well.

Amanda was wonderful this week and she is most certainly growing on me. She takes risks and I love to see that in a singer. I wonder, though, if her voice can withstand the rigors of this competition, given her intense style of singing.

Feel free to comment and express the pros and cons of this week’s Top 8 female performances.

I agree that the girls were not all that great tonight. The only way I can describe the way they sounded (well, to me) was “windy”.

I really liked Asia’H rendition of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”! I agree that Sysesha was incredible tonight!

Any thoughts on who might be leaving us this week, Guys and Girls?

I think Kristy Lee and possibly Asia’h will be leaving and Kady is at risk as well.

The males? David Hernandez and Luke Menard - possibly Chikezie.

I just can’t seem to connect with the girls. I tend to like the guys better during most seasons, but it’s unusual for me to be this disconnected to the girls.

I’ve enjoyed Brooke’s performances, but I find myself wondering if maybe she doesn’t have the life experience to inject into some of these songs. I know nothing about her life, so that’s just speculation, of course. But I just didn’t hear the pain and confusion that I would have liked to hear in Love is a Battlefield, considering the lyrics.

Carly, of course, is great. I’d like to connect with her more than I am, though.

Like I said in a previous post, Simon pushing for a moment for Carly (and others) is really grating on me - especially in Carly’s case. I don’t think it’s fair to her given how good she’s been so far.

Although I enjoyed Amanda’ s performance, I wonder if she has the right vocal strengths to go much longer. Her range seems very limited, both vocally and performance-wise. But she was entertaining tonight!

I can’t help it, but as soon as I hear the intros to any Celine or Whitney song, my ears go on auto mode. Their songs are just too familiar and seriously, if you could do these songs as well as the originals, well, you’d have been “dicscovered”. Unfortunately, Asiah, Ramiele, and Syesha all chose a big “diva” number and I really can’t be very objective.

Carly has a wonderful voice but the song didn’t suit her for some reason. I thought Brooke White gave a wonderful interpretation of Pat Benatar’s “Love is a Battlefield”.

Going home tonight? Kady was just okay on a night where she really needed to shine. And I think it’s a toss-up between Asiah and Syesha in the battle of the Whitney.

Kelsey - I realy think Carly is extremely talented, but she really pushes her voice when she sings through her upper range. Plus, I am not getting any real star power or presence from her - at least not yet.

I loved her first song - “The Shadow Of Your Smile” I think it was? She was giving off a “Barbra Streisand” vibe, at least to me, but if Simon sensed it, he didn’t say anything. Probably better, as he would have called her singing style “too cabaret”. :)

Oh, katherinesmom, please say it isn’t Syesha. We need her in this Top 12 or 10 or whatever this show is shaping up to be! I think she has tremendous star power and a gogeous voice and presence.

Amanda’s voice is limited. Totally agree with your assessmen! However, she brings something different to the show and that is always a good thing.

I hope I’m wrong about Syesha! But I am wondering about both Asiah and Syesha singing Whitney songs, one going first, the other last. I think they will split votes and unfortunately, one of them will be going home. Of course, I also thought Mitt Romney was going to be the next president so I don’t think you should bet money on my predictions!
