I tend to like singers who have big voices but know how to control it well and not oversing (like Martina does). I used to love singing country music and I think Martina is a perfect example of how country music should be sung. The only other person I think has amazing vocal technique is Melinda Doolittle and that is why she was amazing every week on American Idol. Don’t you think Melinda was the best singer from this season and that she should have won?

She may have apowerful voice, but she appears to be singing with a great technical foundation. Her sound is produced from her “gut” – strong diaphragmatic breath support and forward vocal projection.

Many classical singers have power voices – the trick is to balance the power vocals with the softer vocals and Martina does this extremely well.

When I say “classical country”, I mean that she sings her country pop music with a classical foundation. It is a sound classical technical approach that allows her to perform her music with such a superb level of vocal ability.

Actually, I think Jaydee was wise in not choosing “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”. Everyone would have called him on it – another Elvis inspired song or whatever.

On the other hand, you are correct – it would have been a better fit for him.

I think he was really trying to stretch his vocal and performing abilities by singing “I Want To Break Free” and, to a great extent, he did.

It’s hard to abandon a smile when it is so much a part of your performing and personal style, but he really tried and, to some degree, he succeeded.

See, I think you’re right about Jaydee: he has a great voice, and his endearing smile is, in fact, endearing.

Which is why I don’t get why he’s selecting songs that don’t fit that persona. I know he’s saddled with themes, but his decision to sing Green Day or even I Want to Break Free doesn’t fit with that.

He’s clearly unwilling to change his style to reflect the song, so why not sing something that actually fits his style instead of destroying the meaning behind a lyric? He could have done “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and I couldn’t have had a single negative thing to say…instead, he smiles and twangs his way through a song that is more complicated than that.

He’s good, but he needs to be smarter, 16 or not 16.

It really does work. And if you squeeze your butt, that works as well. It seems to fortify the ribcage and back muscles during the supportive process.

June – thanks for stopping by! I thought he was outstanding and, vocally, he was superior to many last evening. Matt and Brian sanf exceptionally well also.

I think that people are just acting foolish if they dismiss Jaydee’s enormous talent. He’s young, after all, and yet has so much talent and advanced vocal ability.

I commend you on your advice for the contestants. I hope they are able to read your comments. I really like that you compliment JayDee on his voice. I too think it is super and the smile thing, is endearing. It is just part of who he is, and I think he should not be put down for it. I have had to do some arguing on some boards that he indeed belongs in this competition. I will continue to do so, when I read constructive remarks, like yours.
