Hi, MCL . . . I was a little disappointed in Cas Haley’s performance last night on America’s Got Talent. It was good, but it wasn’t a song which showcased his voice as much as some that he sang earlier in the competition.

Thank you for watching the link of Cas Haley–I ‘m glad to hear that you think he is a superb singer. I always like to hear your expert opinion because I know nothing about vocal ability. I’m hoping that Cas will perform again this week. I’m not completely sure how this show works. The judges named the top 20 acts. Then two weeks ago the first 10 acts performed. After that show, the viewing audience voted and last week after the remaining 10 acts performed, they announced who the top 5 acts were from the first week. So this Tuesday evening I’m sure they will announce the top 5 from this past week (and I feel quite sure that Cas will be in the top 5). But I don’t know when he will perform again. Hopefully it will be on Tuesday night.

Had a great vacation and thanks for commenting here.

You are absolutely correct – there has to be a blend of head and chest voice throughout the entire register.

However, to attain the correct blend is the trick that, at times, takes months and even years to master.

Once you do, then the voice sounds smooth and even throughout a singer’s range. However, when one sings into the upper range, head voice does indeed become and should become more prevalent – other wise, the voice sounds shrill and/or constricted.

Hi Masterclass Lady. I hope you are enjoying your holiday. I did have a question for you. You mentioned how head voice tone has to be throughout one’s register. Would it be right to say that you have to have head tone in order to more easily match pitch? At the same time you don’t want a overly treble, nasal weak timbre. You also have to add bass or chest voice to strenghten timbre. So is the goal balance between the two? Do you always have to have head tone at the forefront for pitch matching and then just add enough bass (but not so much you lose the head tone element) so that the voice sounds more resonanat regardless of where you are in your range? I thought Martha Joy gave a great vocal performance. I also really enjoyed Greg and Carly Rae’s performances, as well as Tara’s.
