And I got bashed on youtube for saying that Martina McBride sings better than Christina Aguilera and I got so mad at them. I tried to explain to them that just because Martina doesn't scream on the high notes or oversing does not mean Christina is better than her. Some people nowadays don't really understand what pure singing truly is.

Yes, yes, yes!!! How can someone possibly forget Melinda? Melinda is probably the best technical singer in all six seasons and I still think that she should have won. I have been a huge fan of Melinda from the moment she sang in her audition but became even more addicted to her when she sang My Funny Valentine, which I think is probably the best performance in all six seasons...truly a vocal masterclass. Agree with me or not, Jordin still has some technical issues that she really needs to work on such as learning to sing in tune and not using too much chest voice when singing higher notes. Jordin also tries to sound a little like Christina at times.
Another example of a great pure singer is Martina McBride. : )

Yes - I agree with everything you said. I think that she is singlehandedly reponsible for all the over the top power singing we have heard from many singers - the runs and riffs are out of control. I think that, with the emergence of really great pure singers like Michael Buble and Josh Groban, we have, hopefully, put this nasty vocalizing behind us. And Melinda is a wonderful example of truly skilled singing. Cannot forget her.

Yeah, I kind of understand where you are coming from. Christina often sings her high notes with way too much chest voice and its like she doesn't even have a head voice whatsoever. I've heard she doesn't like the sound of her mix voice when she sings higher so she sings exclusively in chest voice on her high notes. Not good at all and she pushes from her throat. I also think she oversings sometimes and does too many vocal runs, one of my biggest pet peeves about singing.

I know this is kind of off-topic but I read your evaluation of the season five top ten performances and you said you preferred Katharine McPhee's voice over Christina Aguilera's. Why is that? Christina's voice is more powerful than Katharine's.

In some ways, I think Sanjaya is just flummoxed, and doesn't know how to please the judges. They are the ones that put him in the top 24 and told him he was wonderful and delightful. But then, they began to berate him and carve him to pieces, tinier and tinir every week. He sang 'pretty' - they didn't like it and told him to be young. He sang young - they didn't like it and told him to have personality. He had personality - they didn't like it and ... you get the picture. I think he's at the point of just having fun and being silly, as there is no where else to go at this point. I truely feel sorry for him ... he's too young and vunerable to be treated this way, especially when it's not his 'fault' that he's back each week. Would I vote for him? Nah, but he's a cute kid trying to make the best of an embarassing and uncomfortable situation (my son is 18, so I feel for him in a Mama way).

Back a number of seasons ago, the 'kids' were not allowed contact with the outside world (in general), and I think they did better and felt better about themselves not hearing all the crap that is on the news and internet. All of them, one way or another, are subject to ridicule beyond what any decent person should have to put up with.

I've been watching American Idol since the season 1 closer between Kelly and Justin (Kelly was head and shoulders above Justin then and now).

Since then I haven't missed an episode of AI and I love watching these "kids next door" mature and rise like stars to the top of their game!

This year, my vote is going toward the talented 17 year old from Arizona, Jordin Sparks. Jordin is the most all-around talented competitor this season. First, she has a great singing voice with broad vocal range (and she's only 17). She is also beautiful and has great stage presence. She is very comfortable on stage and the camera loves her. Her innocence and candor are appealing to the general public (and did I mention she's only 17?). Jordin has the WHOLE package...and I think she is the most marketable of all the idol competitors this year.

If YOU were a recording mogul, who would you want to win that million dollar contract? Who would give you the best return on your investment? Who better than a beautiful, young, hip, teenager with the talent and poise of a seasoned performer?

If you're like me, you'll vote for the BEST all around talent of this season...VOTE FOR JORDIN SPARKS!

Go Jordin!

I have really enjoyed Melinda this season. I think she is out-of-this-world good. Simon compared her to a "young Gladys Knight" after one of her performances. When I watch her sing, I keep thinking about Sarah Vaughan -- especially during her "My Funny Valentine" performance. Sarah V used to go into that lower register quite often and had that monster range. Masterclass lady -- what do you think about that?

In time, I think Melinda could become a musical icon (like the ones mentioned) if her career is handled right.

Though I am not a singer myself, I happened by your site accidentally and it has really given me a much deeper understanding of singing and music. Love it!!

Bravo to you! Demetri

After reading the previous comments and talking with my co-worker about this season's AI, I find it interesting how people perceive the actions of lack of actions of the AI contestants so differently. In addition to their performances, this definitely influences who comes and goes. I never saw Chris Sligh's "cockiness" as two other commenters mentioned. I just thought he was trying to be funny. Afterall, he wasn't going to win because he was the best looking, so he was trying to get the audience to laugh with him, not at him. I liked his voice, although I never expected him to be in the finale--just didn't expect him to leave quite yet. And I really find Melinda's humbleness appealing, although my co-worker and others think it's just an act and they dislike her for that. And I know that some don't like Lakisha's aloof personality, while I think she's just focused on giving the best performance she can every time. I think the people who don't like the personalities of Lakisha and Melinda, probably love the openness of Jordin. And I can't begin to address why people are voting for Sanjaya, although this past week I was amused that he was willing to be so "over the top."

I have to admit not voting once this season. This is the fifth season that I've watched the show and the only year that I ever voted before the finale was last year when I voted multiple times for Taylor and early in the season for Elliott. The reason I haven't voted this year is because there are actually three--maybe four--contestants who I could be happy for if they won (Melinda, Lakisha, Blake, and more recently Jordin). And I have to admit that Gina gave a terrific performance last night--although I personally don't care for her personality and would probably be disappointed if she won.

Thanks Masterclass lady for helping the novices realize just what good singing and performing is. I think it's terrific that you always find something positive about each performance. I actually wish you worked for AI--you'd be quite a help to all of the contestants--unlike some of the professional guests!

Hi everyone;

Thanks for stopping by. I find this season really confusing. I think the singers really need to work on their communication skills, as they are alienating viewers. There was a bit more personality this week, but it's a far cry from what was experienced in some of the other AI seasons. Very strange group indeed.
